tattoome - with a bit of imagination, it is surprising how you can actually copy the basics of plans without breaking the bank. Sure you can't do a pool, but there are many garden plans online you can copy or us just use as the basis of your plans. Then decide on the style of garden you want - tropical, native, cottage, etc. and spend time at your local nurseries looking at plants that meet your needs. Photos on Houzz help give you ideas of how to plant for the effect you want. Generally nurseries will only stock plants that are suitable for your area too. Learn to propagate plants too, many are so easy to do to save even more money with free plants. Don't give up, nothing is impossible, just takes patience.

Number 6 caught my eye the most. It's just as a backyard should be. Green and lush with plants. Going outside should be like going into nature. Most of the other yards were extensions of the house to me. I quite like it when people bring their yards into their house, like building around/incorporating established trees or having green spaces that link areas. Much nicer than pool patios or tennis court areas.
