Pretty Patios That'll Make You Want to Kick Back – Right Now
These sensational outdoor spaces invite relaxation with clever design and comfortable furnishings.
Whether you have a large patio or tiny porch, it’s possible to transform it into a beautiful spot to relax and unwind. Take inspiration from these perfect patios in your own space. Start with tactile materials, comfortable furnishings, weather-resistant fabric and well-considered plantings. Then, consider adding elements such as a roof or heating to create a perfect place to kick back and daydream – any time of the year.
Inside-outside. This built-in seat with weather-resistant fabric is framed by large bi-fold doors which open out to the modest backyard. It’s a brilliant place to read the Saturday newspaper, and since it’s under cover, there’s plenty of shade (whether from the summer sun or autumn drizzle). The only thing missing is a coffee table, for easy access to your morning coffee… or afternoon cocktail.
Taking shelter. When designing the patio zone, hardwood timber was used for the flooring, table and seating. Minimal space is wasted thanks to the split levels, but the real highlight of this area is the louvred roof system, which controls the amount of light and ventilation, allowing it to be adjusted to create the perfect shelter regardless of the weather.
Patio with a view. In this Queensland home, the pool is the focal point, so the patio works as a place to lounge, socialise and watch the youngsters splashing about. For sun protection, the beautifully designed roof was installed, making it possible to sit and enjoy the stunning view for hours on end.
In the zone. A large stone-paved area leads to a smaller curvaceous timber deck with a solid low-lying curved wall that doubles as a handy seat. It means that even when a large group of friends visit, there’s plenty of room to relax and dine.
Heat seeker. On a steeply sloping site on Sydney’s northern peninsula, this house boasts a series of interconnected decks and terraces. The firepit works as a centrepiece on the expansive patio, making the space inviting even on chilly afternoons. A hammock swings under the eaves – beautifully shaded with a view of the lagoon and beach in the distance.
Whitewash. The owners of this original ‘60s house in the Perth suburb of Cottesloe transformed the old patio into this beautiful entertaining area. The white colour scheme instantly creates a feeling of serenity, the rendered planters provide shade and privacy, while the floating timber seat (replete with plenty of cushions) is an irresistible spot to stop with a good book. The built-in gas heater allows the area to be used comfortably year-round.
New heights. This patio’s ceiling is double height, extending from the home’s roof line. It gives the area a feeling of spaciousness and grandeur, as well as providing plenty of shade during the day. The outdoor pendant light has a sculptural form, and its cane-like material complements the shapely lounge beside the pool.
Feeling Zen. A sultry colour palette and tactile materials gives this covered patio a distinctly Zen feel. The deck features a striking graduated edge, while the timber wall with vertical slats merges seamlessly with the serene water feature. The classic hanging egg chair (which now has a free-standing base) provides the perfect place to sit and meditate.
Back to front. While it’s tempting to congregate out the back, the front patio can work as a social hub with kids and neighbours, so don’t overlook this area as a space to transform with the simple addition of some furniture and accessories. Here, the Adirondack chair and rattan seats are both comfy and relaxing – a perfect place to watch the world go by.
Al fresco entertaining. In this elegant home in Victoria’s suburb of Mt Martha, the patio-cum-entertaining-area has everything you need under one roof for easy and relaxed gatherings. The outdoor kitchen and dining suite are all under cover, while the extended timber deck can be utilised for big family functions or parties.
