The erogonomics of a kitchen matter a lot, so many kitchens looks like they are built for pretty photos but would be anoying to cook in. How many "zones" you have don't invalidate the kitchen triangle. I like the wash up area to be hidden away (still within reach) , so many islands have this as centre stage. ignore me I'm just on a rant

Agree with so many of the comments. We’ve just redone our kitchen as part of a bigger renovation. The triangle remains important. The rest is window dressing. From the article I definitely support the notion of having at least 40cm either side of the sink. We’ve come from not having it, to having it and the difference is major as it provides an extra space to prep when the kitchen is busy.
Also remember that having a statement doesn’t need to cost 1000s; it’s just something that stands out for you and makes you happy. For us, it was our light fittings. Over our budget by around $400, (not much in the scheme of things, but a budget is a budget) but I love them and they make all the difference to me.

Having designed my dream kitchen, with zones, which involved moving it, to now just re-doing the existing kitchen (because the budget just wouldn't go ) my design had to be completely redone. But- the zones have featured heavily in my triangle. It's not exactly right..But it's better than I have. And on a budget, not moving plumbing etc means saved $. It should still be a very workable kitchen, keeping the zones in mind. And that's gonna have to do. Btw-my sparky said he puts in lots of flash pendants for impact in kitchens....then is asked to remove nearly as many because they get in the way!!!
