Room of the Week: A Bathroom & Ensuite That 'Speak' to Each Other
How the decor in a bathroom and an ensuite ties in beautifully... without being same-same
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
The ensuite
Brief for the ensuite and bathroom
The requirements for these bathroom designs were improving the existing finishes and fixtures, maintaining the existing amenity and creating quality yet practical spaces. While the layouts worked, the finishes and quality of the fittings in the space needed an upgrade.

It was important to maintain the tonal flow from the limestone flooring, which remains throughout the ground floor but was replaced in these rooms. We had to do that without introducing natural stone, which the client was not keen to continue.

Thinking behind the arrangement of furniture/fixtures:
The home is a slab construction so moving any plumbing would have been a major cost. Fortunately, the existing layouts worked, so we ran with these for both spaces.

What challenges did you have to work around?
Covid-19! The whole construction took place during lockdown so it was slow, with limited numbers allowed on-site.
Why do you think these rooms work?
The volume of both spaces is excellent, with good ceiling heights and details such as full-height doors. The fine handiwork allowed our selection of simple materials and design details to come into their own.
