The client wanted a family friendly space, stylish yet functional. It had to be:
- The hub of the home in an open-plan living area.
- A balanced room with ambience.
- Eclectic in style, with a contemporary approach to Shaker-style profile doors.
- A kitchen with a colour contrast, brass features, glass elements and clean lines.
Starting point
The first point of discussion was how much the client’s little girls loved baking cupcakes with their mum, so the large island-bench idea formed, then everything else was shaped around that.

Colour palette:
- Dulux Harpoon to the blue kitchen cabinetry.
- White benchtops and remaining cabinetry.
Materials palette:
- Polytec two-pack polyurethane cabinetry.
- Caesarstone White Attica to the island benchtop.
- Reconstituted quartz benchtops to the periphery of the kitchen.
- Brushed brass handles.
- Glass inserts in display cabinet doors.
- Beacon Lighting Orion 14 pendant light in brass/amber.
Thinking behind the arrangement of furniture
The main goal was to create a kitchen for a family of four, so the entire family could cook together. With this in mind, the client was still after a stylish space that would serve as a feature to showcase in their newly built home.

Challenges you worked around
- Finding the right proportion of blue/white to be balanced.
- Alleviating the heaviness of the dark blue cabinetry as you enter the room (by making use of the space beside the fridge as a display cabinet with glass inserts in the doors).
- Creating a subtle backdrop for the feature light to stand out against.
Why do you think this room works?
This room works for this family as it ticks all the boxes they were after. The workflow of the space is ideal for their cooking habits and the colour scheme is in keeping with their eclectic (and funky) style throughout the home.
