Room of the Week: A Gem of a Living Area With Feng-Shui Values
This Melbourne living area blends soothing gem-like colours with low-maintenance furniture for a young family
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Brief
To create a warm and inviting family home that was both functional and practical for a family with two young children. The clients wanted some colour in their artwork and accessories, and more neutral furniture pieces with a seamless and light Scandinavian feel. It was also important that the colours throughout the home were complementary and approved by the family’s Feng Shui consultant.

The property is a townhouse with a narrow floor plan, which means we had to utilise and select appropriate furnishings that would fit the rooms well. This room in particular is a shared space for family living area as well as a meals/dining room. It’s located on the lower level of the townhouse, towards the back of the property.
Colour palette
An important point was deciding what colours we were okay to use according to the Feng Shui consultant. We had to work with the existing colours in the kitchen (which is predominantly brown and cream) and ensure the colours selected would complement those while being a highlight in the home.
We agreed that blues, greys, aubergine or rose, with a touch of brass, would form the basis of the colour palette.

Here is the moodboard for the project.
Starting point
I commissioned a painted artwork (located in the kitchen) from Chloe Planinsek for this purpose. This was the starting point for the design.

Key pieces of furniture/fittings
The family requested a built-in entertainment unit on the wall that their new Samsung The Frame TV (designed to look like an artwork when not in use) was to be hung, as well as shelving and a desk. The customised oak entertainment unit was designed and built for the space by Hart Builders then painted in Dulux ‘Baltica’
We also commissioned a custom-made modular sofa from Papillion Furniture, glass pendants from Mark Douglass Design and navy kitchen stools from Green Cathedral.
In addition, the room features an Ethnicraft Bok dining table in oak, from Globe West, with Roxie Dining Chairs from LaForma.

Thinking behind the arrangement of furniture
We had to make sure we followed the brief and found pieces that would fit the space well, and would be functional for a young family… but still feel elegant.

Challenges worked around
The size of the room; getting all the furniture pieces into the shared space for a family room and dining room, without making it feel cramped or cluttered, was difficult.

Why do you think this room works?
It works because it is functional, there is room for everyone on the sofa, the sofa fabric is really durable and a great choice for young kids. Also, the TV is not the dominant piece in the space and acts as wall art when it’s not on. The cabinetry is slimline and floating, and the colours are all complementary, all of which contributes to a successful space.
