Room of the Week: A Pale and Interesting New-Build Kitchen
Brass fittings and panelling bring this shy kitchen alive, while Carrara marble keeps it classic
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Brief
To design a modern home with some industrial and classic touches. The clients wanted the kitchen to be the showpiece of their home, as it is in the centre of the open-plan living area.
The materials palette was a refined selection; we first selected the marble slabs, then selected the grey that worked best with the chosen slabs.
Lots of storage is provided within the island itself and on the back wall, and plenty of space was required for bar stools and people to gather around the kitchen. Small details, such as the cabinet pulls, add a slightly industrial look.

Starting point
A recycled-brick wall is the central focal point of the home. The client wanted to work in with this feature.

Materials palette: Timber, recycled bricks, brass details and Carrara marble from Carrara Marble & Granite.
I came up with the idea of using shiplap early on in the design process, and the client was on board. So many of the other design decisions followed from here. We applied it to the kitchen cabinets and bedroom feature walls, as well as the built-in cabinets in the living room. So it really was an integrated element throughout the house.

Key pieces of furniture/fittings:
- The brass light fittings and cabinet hardware in the kitchen are from Schoolhouse, a USA-based company, and really add an industrial touch to these rooms.
- We picked the Carrara marble slab for the kitchen island to get the exact tone and variation that the client was after.
- Marble on the splashback is Carrara.
- The bar stools were provided by the stylist.
Why do you think this room works?
The layout was carefully considered for high use by a young family and includes hard-wearing materials that also look beautiful. The generous size of the island bench and rich materials make this space enjoyable to cook and entertain in.
