Brief
We wanted to achieve a kitchen that was functional and added plenty of texture to this compact space. The kitchen renovation also modernises a home that was previously dated and tired. We love the different textures created by the cabinetry profile, the timber finishes and the splashback tiles.

Starting point
The colour scheme for the space was to be neutral white and grey tones, with the addition of timber to add warmth to the space. It also ties all the timbers together with the original timber flooring, the ceiling beam, floating shelves and the rustic butcher’s block island. This was to be the centrepiece and part of the inspiration for the space.
The bar area is positioned to view the rocky landscaped in the backyard and take in the morning sun while having a cuppa.

What challenges did you work around?
Working in a compact space can be challenging. However, we found a simple design that worked for our customers where we could open up the space and still provide plenty of bench space for food preparation, a small bar area for sitting and lots of colour and textures to enhance the room.

Tell us about the split-level ceiling
The split ceiling level was due to the old kitchen and original laundry in the back porch area being combined, creating the raked ceiling at the end.
The painted timber ceiling was in keeping with the original design, and turns it into a lovely feature to replicate the VJ-panel style on the kitchen cabinetry doors.

Why do you think this room works?
Because the simple design has a great balance of contemporary charm in a compact space, it captures plenty of modern elements and adds colour and texture to the space.

l really liked this kitchen. Shame no before pics but I guess my imagination could figure out what it looked like before. I love the tones of the wood and the light walls. Very good job. BTW I want that swing!
Before photo for those interested. Unfortunately no photo of the laundry at the back that was combined to make the room larger.
Lovely kitchen and great to see what can be achieved on a (relatively) small budget, compared to most of the other equally lovely (but much higher spend) kitchens featured on Houzz
