Room of the Week: A Small, Perfectly Formed Powder Room
A bold combination of wallpaper and penny round mosaic tiles ties this little room together perfectly
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Starting point
We knew we wanted to use wallpaper. After endless searching I narrowed the choices down, and this beautiful Leaf Stripe wallpaper from Schumacher was the winner. The powder room is located under the stairs so you can see how small the area is, but keeping it light with a splash of dark balances the space nicely. The wallpaper contrasts against the white penny round mosaics on the opposite wall, and the two work hand in hand together even though they are both feature points.

Key design aspects
Colour palette: Black and white with a splash of dark navy that runs through the wallpaper, and the touch of timber and white from the mirror.
Key pieces of furniture/fittings: The floor and behind-toilet tiles are Belgium Stone Carbone 300 x 600 millimetres porcelain in Lapparto finish, and the mosaics are 19 millimetre penny round wall tiles in matt white, both from National Tiles. The wallpaper is from Grant Dorman Interior Products.
We sourced the tapware from Astra Walker and the toilet and basin from Bentons Finer Bathrooms. The planter stand is from Norsu Interiors and the
light fitting is from Darkon.

Challenges worked around
I am pleased to say there were no real challenges for this space. The only item we had to be careful with was with the lighting that was located on the ceiling, which is on an angle. I didn’t want to insert a downlight because I felt it would be too bright. We chose a lovely black fitting from Darkon that works perfectly with the space.

Thinking behind the arrangement of fixtures
Due to this being a small space, the layout had to stay the same through the renovation; it is the materials that make the space a standout. The wallpaper works due to the fact it sits opposite the mosaics on the facing wall. Tiles behind the toilet were a must also.

Why do you think this room works
Because the feature points strangely work hand in hand; wallpaper and penny round mosaics are both feature points and I generally wouldn’t put them together… but in this space they add some fun and complement each other nicely. The wallpaper is easy on the eye, so everything else just seems to work. The balance of the dark and light makes the space appear less modest than it could be, which is a great feature to have for a small powder room. Mostly it captures the clients’ intention of having a fun space for visitors to use.

The clients wanted something with ‘wow’ factor, and were happy to do something outside the square. They aimed for a fresh, exciting and innovative room, so that when visitors came they could use a small space that reflected the homeowners’ design flair.
