Room of the Week: An Elegant Ensuite With Exquisite Detailing
See how an interior designer squeezed a tiny ensuite into a Victorian terrace and made it sing with luxurious finishes
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Brief
With only one main bathroom being used by the whole family, this couple needed another one in order to improve their home’s functionality. Ideally, they wanted it to be an ensuite for the master bedroom.
The challenge was working out how to fit a new ensuite within the existing footprint of the front bedroom of this Victorian terrace.

Did the clients have any specific needs that needed to be met?
They wanted enough space so they could move comfortably around the room together. They also wanted individual cabinetry spaces for storage. I achieved this by installing a long vanity with six deep storage drawers and double basins, plus mirrored shaving cabinets with additional storage above it.
We installed a walk-in shower at the end of the room that runs the full width of the room for a spacious feel. A skylight above it draws in natural light.

Starting point
The marble wall and floor tiles and dark-stained American oak cabinetry finish. These gave the ensuite its luxe, boutique hotel feel. The dark-stained oak and pewter wall lights also linked to the finishes in the master bedroom.
Thinking behind the design
I wanted the scale of the elements in the ensuite to relate to the high ceilings of the adjoining master bedroom.
I also wanted this ensuite to capture the elegance of a Victorian home, while incorporating modern fittings with a classic feel.
