Brief
The original bathroom functioned perfectly well, but the client wanted to update it to a more contemporary design in keeping with the rest of the house (which I also redesigned).
Plus, the bathroom hadn’t been waterproofed properly originally and mould was beginning to develop in the limestone flooring slabs, and joists were starting to rot.
Starting point
Our client has a wonderful art collection and a deep appreciation for handmade works. We brought this element into what is often a clinical space through handmade tiles and handcrafted wall lights.
Thinking behind the arrangement of fixtures
We were locked into the existing plumbing to a certain extent, but it worked.

Key design aspects
Colour palette:
Materials palette and fixtures:
Colour palette:
- Calacatta Vagli Rosato marble from Peraway Marble, which has intricate veining that ranges in colour from green to red.
- Handmade Artisan Grey glazed ceramic wall tiles from Tiento Tiles.
- Evenex Pewter Oak timber veneer from Elton Group to the vanity.
Materials palette and fixtures:
- Fantini Icona Deco tapware from Rogerseller.
- Bath, basin and shower, all from Rogerseller.
- Custom mirror cabinet.
- Volker Haug wall lights.
What challenges did you work around?
The bath was a pretty snug fit, but we wanted it to be freestanding in order to open up the room more.
The tapware took six months to arrive (thanks, Covid!) and the whole process shut down during lockdown, with site visits restricted due to the number of people allowed on-site each day.
