Spotted! Blooming Huge Floral Wallpapers
Now and then one trend has an out-sized impact on interiors. Welcome to the world of Ellie Cashman wallpapers
It was US-born, Netherlands-based Ellie Cashman who, inspired by the work of still-life painters from the Dutch Golden Age, wowed us for the first time with her moody, over-scaled floral wallpaper designs. As she says, “I paint flowers in all their states, with an emphasis on those that break through [the] threshold from dark to light, from seed to stalk to bud to full, extravagant bloom”.
Not surprisingly, her sensual wallpapers have become an interiors sensation. And today, they’re turning up in the most beautiful spaces, with many different interpretations. While it’s certainly not for the pattern-shy, we show how you can incorporate this incredible floral beauty into your interiors – while seeing how Houzzers around the world have woven it into their homes.

Dark Floral wallpaper
In Minnesota, USA, Dark Floral wallpaper has been used to create drama in this modestly sized powder room.
Tip: If you’re shy about experimenting with a wallpaper this bold on all walls, try it on a single accent wall and use paint (picking out a colour from the wallpaper’s colourway, such as the gentle blush) for the remainder.

And just to prove that wallpaper doesn’t belong only on walls, Dark Floral provides a heavenly ceiling feature in the living area of this house in Orange County in the US.
And it lights up this sitting room in Notting Hill in the UK…
… while providing an appropriately botanical backdrop to a cluster of sculptural bugs on a chimneybreast in the same room.
This Victorian bathroom by Heritage Bathrooms showcases the versatility of the design. The pattern works well not only in modern interiors, it enlivens traditional spaces too.
An eclectic home in Cheshire, UK celebrates the big botanical trend with a dedicated Dark Floral wall in this living/dining space.
And it injects drama and feminine appeal in the otherwise clean-lined study nook in Michigan, USA.

Dark Floral 2 wallpaper
Dark Floral 2 is used here as a decorative feature wall in a room in Denver, USA, with a canopy framing the central flower.
Tip: Notice how the use of symmetrical bedside tables and lighting lends an air of sophistication and restraint to the scheme.

London-based interior styling firm LondonFatCat used the wallpaper to transform a guest bedroom into this sophisticated reading room.
This bedroom has a lovely cosseting feel due to Dark Floral 2. The XL version, which is twice the scale of the original, adds a dramatic edge to the space.
The wallpaper runs along one feature wall…
… with the facing walls painted in a deep black with Millennial Pink and white accessories.

And then there’s XXL, three times the size of its original design. This scale imitates the look and feel of a large-scale mural on a feature wall.
Tip: To create an elegant and soothing interior space, Cashman recommends pairing this wallpaper with beige, soft pinks, subtle greens, light yellow or purple.

Summer Squall in ‘Midnight Blue’ wallpaper detail
This luxe home office in Toronto, Canada sports Ellie Cashman’s Summer Squall in ‘Midnight Blue’, which is designed to evoke a “magical, nighttime, midnight blue garden world,” according to the artist.

For something different, this town house in Paddington, Sydney, uses Ellie Cashman’s floral fabric.
Twisting Tulips wallpaper
Ellie took an original graphite drawing inspired by an old-fashioned botanical illustration to come up with her Twisting Tulips wallpaper design. The bending flowers suggest movement, making it work as powerful focal point in the room.

In an artist’s statement, Ellie Cashman says: “As they emerge out of the darkness and into the light, flowers provide us with powerful symbols of our common human longing for transcendence, for that brief experience of the divine, the moment we are closest to ‘God’, magic, enlightenment, nirvana… or whatever one might call it.”
The foggy, midnight blue wallpaper with its overblown blooms has an almost fairy tale garden-like quality to it. And while Ellie recommends a tall wall for this design, she believes even small spaces such as powder rooms can provide an intense and immersive experience.
