Stickybeak of the Week: A Playful Nursery With an Artistic Touch
A mum uses her artistic background to make her baby daughter's nursery unique
You may have previously seen the beautiful bathroom in this renovated home in Maroubra, but another room in the house worthy of praise and attention is baby Molly’s nursery. The room is full of colour, fun and unique artistic touches made by Mum, Karen Enis, who is also a graphic designer. Enis worked with her friend and former colleague, Kate Connors, to complete the look within a tight timeframe, as Enis was pregnant with Molly at the time. Connors describes the design as “bursting with personal touches … including illustrations on the wall, art and handmade soft furnishings.”

To add a custom look, many of the pieces in the room have been handmade by Enis (including the mobile over the cot) and her partner, who made the bookcase. She also decorated with items from her stationery and graphic design business, Me and Amber.

More of Enis’ artistic touches can be seen in the artwork that decorates the room. She drew this illustrated picture of animals with Molly’s future development in mind.
Enis loves the chalkboard wall as it provides visual contrast to an otherwise bright room, but she also loves to doodle on it and hopefully Molly will soon be old enough to take over. “Probably not the best lesson to teach your one year old, but fun nonetheless,” says Connors.

The yellow corn stool is a cute touch that adds colour to this corner of room, and was bought by Enis years ago when she worked at furniture store, Planet.
Storage is of course important for little ones as they grow up and accumulate more things, so stylish and practical cupboards were fitted in the room for Molly’s toys and clothing. The handles were also customised with unique timber shapes.

The entire upper floor was renovated in September 2014, and Molly’s room was the most important to have completed first, in time for her arrival. Connors had to frame up new walls, sheet and paint them (including the chalkboard wall), install custom wardrobes, lay new carpet and decorate the space, all within deadline.
