The Most Popular Entry Photos of 2015
Readers find inspiration in organized mudrooms of every shape and style
While looking through the most popular entries of 2015, it was interesting to note that rather than fancy grand foyers, backdoor mudrooms were clearly the favorites. Interesting, but not so surprising: Having a good place to land, stash outerwear, take off shoes, hang up bags, get organized, always find the keys and perhaps charge electronics is key to keeping a busy household organized and tidy. Popular styles ran the gamut, from country farmhouse to eclectic, rustic to minimalist. Without further ado, here are 20 of the entryway photos Houzz users found most welcoming in 2015.
Gallery style. With such beautiful and large windows in this entry, the focus is more about looking back outside. White paint, a modern door with cutouts and an artful bench made of a log slice on lucite legs give this space an art gallery look.

A bench. A place to perch and put on or remove shoes is always welcome in an entry, and it helps keep dirt from being tracked inside. These custom built-ins create a cozy niche for the bench, while a graphic poster behind it brings style.

A mirror. This dresser-like cabinetry topped with a mirror is an ingenious touch, providing a spot to check lipstick and hair and enough space to dig through one’s bag for a comb or makeup. Separate spaces for kids and adults keep the family organized, while a French door lets in light. A slate floor and three-quarter-height painted wood wainscoting stand up to wear and tear.

Hooks, shelves and cubbies. This efficient entry shares space with the laundry room and pantry. Making the most of this wall, the designers added upper shelves, hooks and a bench with storage underneath.

A burst of color. A door is always a great opportunity to add color. Happy turquoise distinguishes this entrance, playing off the artwork over the console table. Meanwhile, metallic Moroccan wallpaper and a Moravian star pendant draw the eye upward.

A fire pole. Well, admittedly, this was not a common element seen in the average mudroom! But it suits this vivacious family’s sense of fun. Also adding to the lively space is a wallcovering composed of their own Instagram photos.

Beautiful baskets. Wicker baskets are a great fit for these under-bench cubbies, and the ones up high top off the coat wall.

Smart use of corners. This clever built-in makes the most of what could have been dead space. Also worth noting is the way this area is styled: The copper ware and plant add warmth, and the scarves on the hooks add a pop of loveliness.
A place for everything. The first step in the design process here was taking inventory of all the sweatshirts, shoes, bags, outerwear and devices in need of charging stations that were bursting the seams of the existing mudroom shared by a family of six. Then the cubbies required to hold all of that were planned out.

Carved-out spaces. If you have little to zero space by your main entry, consider crafting a niche using a thick-wall strategy or by taking out a closet. Sky blue paint, shoe cubbies that double as a bench and hooks make this entryway functional.

Speaking of carving out space, these wall-mounted shelves make the most of a wide stairway. Space for mudroom items is provided via cubbies of different heights.

Wall-mounted bicycle racks. Wooden racks add a stylish touch to this entryway and keep bikes off the floor and out of the way. Stacked one atop the other, the bikes almost become sculpture.

Personal touches. It’s nice to let visitors know what you’re all about from the second your door opens. Favorite art pieces and accessories make a space inviting and unique, and can foreshadow what awaits inside.

An unexpected touch. It’s not every day you enter a home and come upon a red leather sofa bench and a dog statue. Especially when the rest of the space is rugged stone, timbers and iron. This element of surprise enhances the entry experience, and also provides a handy spot for taking off snow boots.

Dutch doors. These doors are special because you can open the top half and fantasize that a talking horse will come by and stick his head in. Or at least that’s what draws me to Dutch doors.
High drama. So I know I talked about how popular high-functioning mudroom entries were this year, but they weren’t the whole story. We still like to dream of grand foyers like this one, with its two-story height, checkerboard marble floor, fan light transom and sidelights, Chippendale railing and collage of mirrors up the wall. So I leave you with an example where we can daydream about a lifestyle in which the house staff answers the door and keeps the margaritas coming while we lounge by the pool that overlooks the ocean out back.
