I'm going for a very wide but short window splash back too as I was planning the exact same thing - planter box herb garden for easy access to my herbs and a pretty green effect that can be seen all the way from the dining room.

However, now that you point it out, I have had a house where we had a west facing kitchen window with black counter tops and it was really hot working in it when preparing dinner. But that house had huge full height west facing windows ( we bought it off a plan), I am just planning a 45 cm tall sliding window splash back this time and the rest of that wall will be insulated with upper cabinets. So I hope it will be OK.

The other problem I foresee is that if you are not a great gardener and the herbs keep dying on you it will look quite ugly.

I wonder about the efficiency of the sink in an island bench. I love to cook and this just wouldn't give me sufficient space to clean up in-it would always be on view. Thinking a stove top in the island bench may be a better use of space as this gives me a much bigger cooking zone, preparation and serving area with ease of access. Also can hang the extractor from the ceiling over this area-light and fan. I'm considering this in a galley kitchen. Thoughts anyone?
