We're just in the process of getting our certificate of occupency and have an 8mtr lap pool in the home. Our inspector tried to tell us that we were going to have to put a secondary saftey fence and gate in after entering the first safety door because he stated that you cannot enter a pool from inside without the second safety.

Thought I'd just pass on what I found out from VBA (Victorian Building Ass.) which incidentally cleared us of having to put in the second safety fence and gate.

An indoor pool must have four walls and be roofed and if the only access into the indoor pool is from inside the home only, the door required must be self-closing and self-latching and have the door handle set at 1.5m high and can be a hinged or sliding door.

However, if a pool is outside the home and access is gained directly from inside the home, the pool not only requires a safety fence up to and including the said door which needs to be a self-closing and self-latching with the lock set at 1.5m from the ground but a second fence needs to be installed so when access is gained through the first safety door, there is a secondary safety access point beyond that door.

It was rather confusing to us initially but it all has to do with whether the pool is conmpletely inside the home or outside the home.

Hope this helps anyone else confused with pool regs in Vic anyway.

As always an entertaining and informative article. I always enjoy the accompanying 'eye candy' photography. It's worth mentioning that if apartment dwellers are considering an above ground plunge pool or hot tub for a patio, they should consult Strata Management to arrange an engineer's report. Just because there's the space for one, doesn't necessarily mean a concrete patio has the capacity for the additional load baring weight. For instance, a garden apartment situated over the blocks basement garage. The owners taking into account the weight of the empty fiberglass pool, but neglected to take into account the additional weight of it filled, in addition to the stone paving and timber decking.
