We leased our home to a builder as a display home. Do not fall in love with the display homes, ours has around 150k of extras, not including all the very expensive landscaping. Plus our ceilings are over 10 feet high, which makes the house seem huge. Even though we made a lot of money leasing our home as a display house, I feel bad for the unprepared that fell in love with our home, only to find out it really wasn't the same as what they would be building as the basic floor plan.

Be sure to ask questions about R value of insulation including the thin insulation directly under the roof sheets or tiles which saves huge amounts of money for long term heating and cooling costs. Ask who manufactures the windows and whether double glazing is a possibility. Meet suppliers of windows and kitchen cabinets. Slow down and ask important questions that mean less money long term on power usage. Don't let emotion beat logic. Know the direction the sun shines on your block and aim for living areas in the north for the best light. See if room configuration can be changed to make the most of the northern light in any house plans considered.
