What Size Bed Suits You and Your Family?
Did you know there are three sizes of king bed or that there are beds for tall teens? Read on to decide what size beds you need at home
From the cradle to the other end of life, your bed is perhaps the most important piece of furniture you own – and one you’ll change numerous times. From the time you’re born you’re placed in one, whether it be a bassinet, a cot or a handy drawer with a few socks stuffed inside for padding. A bed is also the place where a lot of people want to end up when the end does finally come, and where some of the greatest moments in life may very well occur. Here, we look at the various size beds commonly available, from little kids’ cots to up-sized super kings.
Toddler: 70 x 160 centimetres
Once face planting becomes less of an issue, and a little one is able to climb over the rails of a cot (so it no longer serves as a device to keep baby from shocking Mum and Dad awake at 5.30am by belly flopping onto either one of them), it’s time for them to move to a toddler bed.
These are generally around the same width as a cot, but at 160 centimetres long, give growing legs that little bit more room to stretch. Oh, and they still generally have partial rails, so that a toddler can easily get in and out of bed to pee and whatnot, but his or her face is more likely to make contact with a rail than a rug if he or she rolls over a bit too far.

Single: 92 x 188 centimetres
Bid farewell to rails and hello to rolling every which way you want in a brand new big-kid’s single bed (please note rolling excessively will now lead to face planting, but that’s a risk one has to take).
With roughly an extra 20 centimetres in width and a whopping 188 centimetres total length, this bed is equipped to provide plenty of space for a young child, every single one of his or her dolls/action figures, the imaginary friend that may or may not be named Drop Dead Fred, soccer boots and a family dog or two.

And just in case your child ever wants to have a friend stay over, kids beds come in handy stackable forms too! Just make sure said friend doesn’t still wet the bed before you let them sleep on the top bunk…
Long Single: 92 x 203 centimetres
Once a child hits their teens, a sudden and seemingly endless growth spurt may require that they move on to a long single bed. With a whopping 203 centimetres in length to accommodate new proportions, the bed has plenty of space but the action figures and soccer boots must now be replaced with a pair of Air Jordans and a vintage Les Paul guitar.

King Single: 107cm x 203 centimetres
King singles are the same length as long singles, but have an extra 10 or so centimetres in width to provide a young adult (and any potential sleepovers of a different kind?) with a little more wriggle room.

Double: 138 x 188 centimetres
When you know you’ve progressed to the stage of fully-fledged adult, you might be in the market for a double bed. Not only have the toys and shoes been given the boot out of the bed, but at 138 centimetres wide, there’s now room for a whole other person to bunk in with you … without hiding it!

Queen: 153 x 203 centimetres
As a young’un, you may have become familiar with this piece of furniture known as ‘Mum and Dad’s bed’, and been warned to stay out of it on certain nights. The queen bed, at 153 centimetres wide, seems to be a popular choice with parents the world over. Maybe because it provides enough space for two full-grown adults, as well as a belly-flopping toddler or two?

A standard cot in Australia usually has these measurements, although there are plenty of variations – depending on the manufacturer. This size seems just right for a tiny bundle of joy (and poop), a multitude of stuffed toys, and a constantly varying array of Winnie the Pooh bedlinen. The handy grated sides ensure babies don’t end up face planting into the floor in the middle of the night, a great idea despite the many rumours I’ve heard – as yet unsubstantiated – that babies do actually bounce, so surely you’d be fine without them?
