Earth 911 is a great resource for finding recycling resources. I have found places that take plastics, styrofoam, paint, appliances, and metal. I find it easier to part with things if I can find places that take them other than landfills. Goodwill takes textiles for recycling, Habitat for Humanity ReStores take hardware, cabinets, doors, furniture, building materials. Veterinarians take old towels & blankets. Lots of places take gently used clothing & household items. Also, it feels great to gift people with items from your home that they admire that you no longer (or never did) use or love.

The recycling program in my municipality takes paper, cardboard, plastic, styrofoam, metal, glass. The fire hall takes electronics cds, cassettes and batteries. There's a special collection for paints and solvents every few months at the City Hall. Stores that sell electronics also take them back. Stores and garages that sell tires also take them back.
