peterwmaher64, I've seen what you've described on Colorbond roofs. I couldn't say this with any scientific backing, but I've been told this issue can be prevented by sarking over the top of the ridge (under the roofing iron). Apparently cutting the sarking at the ridge causes the mildew to form. This could be popular rumour, but maybe it has some kind of bearing, because there seems to be houses that do and don't have the issue. Perhaps ventilating the roof space with whirly birds would also alleviate the problem? Buildings need to breathe. But ultimately whilst the issue you describe is not so pretty, the heat reflective function of a white roof is arguably more important than aesthetics.
