The dining room for me has always been about the table, a place for people to spread out on a large perfectly flat surface, especially for cutting fabrics, which of course no one does any more.

I got to do homework and drawing in a large space, with peace and quiet. Priceless.

Plus the whole softness of the felted layers under the damask cloths, strange implements in special drawers, people polishing silver, napery, flowers and the glory of a fully dressed table and sideboards.

In my next design I will be having a long open plan space. Kitchen, island, dining, living, entrance bit like a warehouse.

I realised I had assumed a separate dining room and recently realised what I needed was a studio in that space, which I can make into a fabulous dining room, for special events - no one sees the table if you have great felts and cloths.

I still love a large table and have quite a few - just in case...

Spmm, yes! I used table for laying out material and patterns (still do but not nearly often as in the past). And for my kids and I to put together large puzzles over the school holidays. Thanks for the reminder. :)

Each time I've lived in a house with a separate dining room it felt uncomfortable to eat in there - firstly people gathered around the kitchen benches anyway and secondly we had to clear a space to eat because it was more used as a desk/work table. So when we bought our own home we learned the lesson and have a huge kitchen island bench for shared meals and a separate room just for a dedicated workbench (yes its an old dining table).
