FLOORS FloorboardsUncover what’s hiding under dated vinyl, tile or laminate flooring. If you are lucky, you will find original floorboards. If so, take advantage of its natural good looks – a sanded floor is a warm feature in any style of bathroom. For a natural look that shows off the grain, sand and stain the floorboards with a clear or tinted varnish.DIY TIP: Before sanding, hammer each nail flush or below the board’s surface.COST: $165; estimate based on the cost of a hammer, palm sander, gloves, dust mask, ear muffs, safety glasses, stain and varnish.Other ways to use wood in the bathroom

Rev up the rustic If you’ve inherited a period fireplace, make it a feature even if it isn’t functional. Here, logs add a wonderful textural layer, but a collection of oversized church candles or a vintage enamel jug full of fresh flowers would also work a treat. If your floorboards don’t look as pristine as these, you might want to cover up worse-for-wear ones with a tough, hard-wearing paint designed for bathrooms. Don’t worry about any nicks or imperfections, as these will only add to the character. Finish the look by hanging up oversized mirrors and vintage artwork for a bathroom that’s truly yours.
Pearson + Projects added this to Serial Renovators on How to Set Up and Stick to a Budget
Our first budget is normally quite generic, but we subsequently add in more detail and break down each category. What may initially be a single line of ‘Bathroom $5,000’, will then be broken down into items I have sourced as well as quotes we have received from contractors. Based on our overall budget, I will get quotes for bathroom fixtures and fittings, which will then determine how much the plumber’s costs will be. This will then give me an indication of where I can either save or spend money; for example if I can afford tiling or feature lighting. Throughout this whole process we will update our budget from a cost estimate, to a quote, to the actual cost. Whoever is coordinating that element of the renovation will also update the budget; this ensures the budget is as accurate and up to date as possible.Read more stories about renovating
