Built with Zen in mind,this tea room was designed and built using traditional Japanese joinery and materials. Some of the Japanese elements include: bamboo ceiling panels, Yukimi shoji screens (screens with a vertical viewing panel) anda traditional Japanese straw plaster (called Wara Juraku) which gave the walls a unique texture. “When the client is willing to go out on a limb, using unique materials…..the results are nothing short of amazing,” says Matt Plaskoff, President of One Week Bath. “Like all projects, this one was not without challenge. Loree had a small 9’6″ by 9′ bathroom that contained a standard tub, toilet and vanity. What she really wanted was a separate tub and separate shower to achieve an open Zen feel, The centerpiece of the renovation is the Frederic Hammered Copper Japanese Style Soaking Tub from Signature Hardware. Each tub is hand-crafted, hammered, and finished. The river rock sink from Eden Bath used in this bathroom is also one-of-a-kind and gives the space a natural, organic feel. Pebble wall tiles by Dal Tile round out the project giving a clean and finished look throughout the space with interesting texture.

Inspiration for a small asian backyard garden in Portland with a water feature and natural stone pavers.

The homeowners expressed interest in upgrading the landscape surrounding their existing in-ground swimming pool. On the initial site visit, we were greeted by an outdated concrete pool deck, plastic pool coping and a few lonely mature shrubs and trees. The north end of the backyard was enclosed by the garage wall and a few half-hearted attempts at growing vines to mask its massiveness. The homeowners’ goal was to refresh the existing landscape while working within the constraints of the existing pool and its narrow perimeter spaces. The homeowners admire Asian garden aesthetics, so ornamentation and plant species were selected that emphasized simplicity in their distinct forms. The narrow planting spaces around the pool were maximized through layers of texture, where pebbles and accent rocks complement and contrast with unique plant forms. The pool now feels integrated with this lush landscape of ornamental grasses and specimen evergreens.
