The hillside garden responds to movement of the wind, flow of the water and warmth of the sun with an artful integration of storm water management practices. Rhythmic landforms and a grassy swale slow stormwater flow, allowing it to percolate into the ground and divert it away from the house. The meandering path and sitting area nestle in a warm pallet of colors maximizing the use of the side property and views of the San Francisco Bay. Low maintenance and drought & deer tolerant planting provide a gracious transition between the built environment and the adjoining openlands.

The goal in this job was to blend the driveway with the garden, creating a seamless space that accommodates parking, plants and people. Railway sleeper & turf driveways are increasingly popular and they are easy on the eye and effective for a space that blends as a car space and a garden. Some specialty feature work is the exposed water tank on a railway sleeper bench.

Once completely dominated by Eucalyptus forest, this site was degraded with poor soils and the house construction created a large area of disturbance. We restored the site to the point that within a year it looks as though nature slowly took over on its own. A strictly native plant palette of simple textures and masses of similar species achieves the affect. This garden was featured in the 2013 Santa Barbara Botanic Garden annual garden tour. Carex praegracilis, Thalictrum fendleri, Leymus condensatus, Quercus agrifolia

The gloriously soft burgundy grass on the right is pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum'. The tree on the left is a Jacaranda which was planted as an advanced tree at around 2m tall and has filled out beautifully.

This garden is all about creating a fun, safe environment for kids to learn and play. Log steppers and boulders of varying heights encourage the young ones to test their balance, while mini railway sleepers provide a place to rest and chat.

Our clients wanted us to create a garden that screened the neighbours, was less ‘linear’ and be textured and lush. They wanted a garden that had layers and depth, something to journey through and enjoy.
Drawing on the utilitarian, earthy materials of the home a modest material palette of decomposed granite and recycled brick was used to tie the style of the home to the garden terraces. Each terrace whether for outdoor dining or for relaxing under the dappled light of the trees provides a garden space that is enjoyed by all.

This small courtyard sits between the front garden and the house. It is in Newtown, Geelong on the edge of the barwon river. The timber structure frames the view out over the river. Circular seating gives ample space for a gathering.

Secret Gardens
This coastal garden is located 4 hours north of Sydney. This garden has been an ongoing project for Secret Gardens over the last decade. The original brief was for a ‘mini botanic garden’ which proved a challenge on a site with little tree or vegetation cover and limited top soil. The plantings are 95% native, from the establishing rainforest where over 25 varieties of trees have been used to the drier areas where Callistemon, Kangaroo Paw and ornamental grasses have been used in large swathes. The result now is an established garden that will continue to evolve and provide great enjoyment for our clients.
