Coburg Frieze is a purified design that questions what’s really needed. The interwar property was transformed into a long-term family home that celebrates lifestyle and connection to the owners’ much-loved garden. Prioritising quality over quantity, the crafted extension adds just 25sqm of meticulously considered space to our clients’ home, honouring Dieter Rams’ enduring philosophy of “less, but better”. We reprogrammed the original floorplan to marry each room with its best functional match – allowing an enhanced flow of the home, while liberating budget for the extension’s shared spaces. Though modestly proportioned, the new communal areas are smoothly functional, rich in materiality, and tailored to our clients’ passions. Shielding the house’s rear from harsh western sun, a covered deck creates a protected threshold space to encourage outdoor play and interaction with the garden. This charming home is big on the little things; creating considered spaces that have a positive effect on daily life.

This hall 1/2 Bathroom was very outdated and needed an update. We started by tearing out a wall that separated the sink area from the toilet and shower area. We found by doing this would give the bathroom more breathing space. We installed patterned cement tile on the main floor and on the shower floor is a black hex mosaic tile, with white subway tiles wrapping the walls.

Our clients wanted a REAL master bathroom with enough space for both of them to be in there at the same time. Their house, built in the 1940’s, still had plenty of the original charm, but also had plenty of its original tiny spaces that just aren’t very functional for modern life. The original bathroom had a tiny stall shower, and just a single vanity with very limited storage and counter space. Not to mention kitschy pink subway tile on every wall. With some creative reconfiguring, we were able to reclaim about 25 square feet of space from the bedroom. Which gave us the space we needed to introduce a double vanity with plenty of storage, and a HUGE walk-in shower that spans the entire length of the new bathroom! While we knew we needed to stay true to the original character of the house, we also wanted to bring in some modern flair! Pairing strong graphic floor tile with some subtle (and not so subtle) green tones gave us the perfect blend of classic sophistication with a modern glow up. Our clients were thrilled with the look of their new space, and were even happier about how large and open it now feels!

This expansive bathroom is a harmonious fusion of luxury, functionality, and natural elements inspired by the lush greenery of the jungle. Bespoke His and Hers Black Marble Porcelain Basins: The focal point of the space is a his & hers bespoke black marble porcelain basin atop a 160cm double drawer basin unit crafted in Italy. The real wood veneer with fluted detailing adds a touch of sophistication and organic charm to the design. Brushed Brass Wall-Mounted Basin Mixers: Wall-mounted basin mixers in brushed brass with scrolled detailing on the handles provide a luxurious touch, creating a visual link to the inspiration drawn from the jungle. The juxtaposition of black marble and brushed brass adds a layer of opulence. Jungle and Nature Inspiration: The design draws inspiration from the jungle and nature, incorporating greens, wood elements, and stone components. The overall palette reflects the serenity and vibrancy found in natural surroundings. Spacious Walk-In Shower: A generously sized walk-in shower is a centrepiece, featuring tiled flooring and a rain shower. Hood House is a playful protector that respects the heritage character of Carlton North whilst celebrating purposeful change. It is a luxurious yet compact and hyper-functional home defined by an exploration of contrast: it is ornamental and restrained, subdued and lively, stately and casual, compartmental and open. For us, it is also a project with an unusual history. This dual-natured renovation evolved through the ownership of two separate clients. Originally intended to accommodate the needs of a young family of four, we shifted gears at the eleventh hour and adapted a thoroughly resolved design solution to the needs of only two. From a young, nuclear family to a blended adult one, our design solution was put to a test of flexibility. The result is a subtle renovation almost invisible from the street yet dramatic in its expressive qualities. An oblique view from the northwest reveals the playful zigzag of the new roof, the rippling metal hood. This is a form-making exercise that connects old to new as well as establishing spatial drama in what might otherwise have been utilitarian rooms upstairs. A simple palette of Australian hardwood timbers and white surfaces are complimented by tactile splashes of brass and rich moments of colour that reveal themselves from behind closed doors. Our internal joke is that Hood House is like Lazarus, risen from the ashes. We’re grateful that almost six years of hard work have culminated in this beautiful, protective and playful house, and so pleased that Glenda and Alistair get to call it home.
