This family wanted a cheerful casual coastal living room. We brought in lots of pattern and a red/white/navy palette to drive home the coastal look. The formerly red brick gas fireplace was wrapped in ship lap and given a custom hemlock mantel shelf. We also added an accent wall with navy grasscloth wallpaper that beautifully sets off the ivory sofa and unique wooden boat wreath.

Changing Spaces

The main bedroom lounge is an extension of the main bedroom and an area where one can watch TV and work at the ample space the long desk provides. It has large L-Shaped custom made couches that are extra deep for comfort and relaxation. Textured fabrics were used for a few scatter cushions and a large chunky knit throw is the perfect cover to snuggle under on a chilly evening. Grass cloth wall paper in a light blue hue adds texture to the walls in this lounge area and a large Katherine Wood commissioned artwork works beautifully in this space against the wall paper. Custom made coffee table and side tables were manufactured in Oak and adds another material and layer to this area. A large lamp with raffia shade gives this lounge a tranquil ambience in the evenings. A soft area rug grounds and warms the space and adds yet another texture and depth of tone.

This is a major update to a timeless home built in the 80's. We updated the kitchen by maximizing the length of the space and placing a coffee bar at the far side. We also made the longest island possible in order to make the kitchen feel large and for storage. In addition we added and update to the powder room and the reading nook on the second floor. We also updated the flooring to add a herringbone pattern in the hallway. Finally, as this family room was sunken, we levelled off the drop down to make for a better look and flow.

The room is designed with the palette of a Conch shell in mind. Pale pink silk-look wallpaper lines the walls, while a Florentine inspired watercolor mural adorns the ceiling and backsplash of the custom built bookcases. A French caned daybed centers the room-- a place to relax and take an afternoon nap, while a silk velvet clad chaise is ideal for reading. Books of natural wonders adorn the lacquered oak table in the corner. A vintage mirror coffee table reflects the light. Shagreen end tables add a bit of texture befitting the coastal atmosphere.

You want to hang out where the lounge furniture is the most comfortable and sofas or chairs create a sense of homeliness. Filling this important space with cheap furniture is unlikely to bring you the same long-lasting comfort as a quality chaise lounge or a couch. These choices will directly affect the quality of your evenings as you wind down from the daily grind. While planning a renovation or redesign, weigh up the priorities of seating, heating, an entertainment unit and bookcases. Identify your main activity in the room and and design around that. Many beach style living rooms aren't complete without a fireplace, but if you can't accommodate that, invest in built-in or furniture that suits your home. Common trends include Danish furniture and other kinds of Scandinavian furniture. Plush sofas, recliner chairs and sofa beds will always be popular.
