4D Studio

St Saviour’s Church in Walton Place Knightsbridge originally designed by Belgrave Square architect George Basevi in 1838 was an interesting and challenging project. The brief to Will Caradoc-Hodgkins of leading London residential architect and interior designer 4D Studio was the conversion of a lofty church directly behind Harrods into a private residence whilst at the same time creating a smaller place of worship for parishioners. This included the unusual request to re-locate the organ and create a massive acoustic wall between the house and the church. However this proved to be small fry compared with the task of supporting the church on 40 hydraulic jacks to allow excavation for an underground swimming pool and games room. The a four storey home with basement swimming pool was owned for six years by Les Misérables and Miss Saigon writer Alain Boublil who sold it in 2009. It has since undergone a makeover to create one of the finest private homes in Knightsbridge and is on the market for £50 million

Pool with beamed ceiling: Set in a remote district just outside Halfway, Oregon, this working ranch required a water reserve for fire fighting for the newly constructed ranch house. This pragmatic requirement was the catalyst for the unique design approach — having the water reserve serve a dual purpose: fitness and firefighting. Borrowing from the surrounding landscape, two masses — one gabled mass and one shed form — are skewed to each other, recalling the layered hills that surround the home. Internally, the two masses give way to an open, unencumbered space. The use of wood timbers, so fitting for this setting, forms the rhythm to the design, with glass infill opening the space to the surrounding landscape. The calm blue pool brings all of these elements together, serving as a complement to the green prairie in summer and the snow-covered hills in winter.

This renovation of a pool and spa in Highland Park, IL began with the demolition of an existing on-grade round spa and existing pool stairs. We then re-plumbed the pool and installed a new raised spa with waterfall feature and custom fascia around the spa, installed new geometric steps in the pool, installed new LED pool and spa lights, installed new perimeter tile and finish in the pool and spa in Onyx color, and new winter cover anchors and cover to protect the new pool and spa.

What type of pool should I install?

The dimensions of your backyard will determine the type of inground pools you can install. Take into account boundary restrictions and pool fencing compliance. Fibreglass versions are cheaper, and quicker to install; whereas concrete constructions are better suited to tricky sites and give you more freedom in design. If you’re on a tight budget or don’t want to commit to an inground pool, above ground pools are a more affordable alternative. If you only have a small backyard, a plunge pool is a great solution, and can easily run along a boundary wall or down the side of a house. This option is also low maintenance, can be heated for use in winter, and can do double duty as a swim spa. What pool fencing options are available?

While the specifics vary from state to state, fencing is required of most pool designs. However, pool fencing doesn’t have to obscure your pool design. Glass fencing is increasingly popular for this reason exactly, and is available framed, frameless, semi-frameless and even in-ground. A cheaper alternative is aluminium or steel fencing, which, again, are available in a variety of styles: flat top, loop-top, double-top and wire-based.

What pool landscaping features should I consider?

To get the most out of your pool, design an area that offers multiple hangouts. Include a nearby barbecue, dining area, seating for lounging and outdoor shower. Having shaded areas will give you more reason to stay poolside longer, too. Timber decking and stone paving are popular choices for pool surrounds, and are also helpful in creating zones. Just imagine a raised timber platform with a daybed – a luxurious, resort-style addition to any pool design. Leafy trees and rocks will create a more natural-looking oasis, and will help provide more privacy for swimmers. Where you want your landscape to be the main focus, keep pool equipment and furnishings to a minimum.
