Inspiration for a large traditional kids bathroom in Toronto with a pedestal sink, a shower/bathtub combo, a two-piece toilet, white tile, ceramic tile, white walls, an alcove tub and mosaic tile floors.

This 19th century shingle style home overlooking the Atlantic Ocean was completely restored and expanded. Elizabeth Brosnan Hourihan worked closely with the architectural staff of Carpenter & MacNeille on all aspects of the home’s interior detailing, customization and finishes. Ongoing throughout the process was the specification and procurement of fine furnishings, window treatments, rugs, lighting, artwork and accessories. Several of the furnishings were handmade in England and Italy and a number of pieces are antiques dating as far back as the 17th century and needleworks as early as 1550. There is an antique rug collection, an antique American book collection, antique silver flatware – with a signature engraving on all the pieces, antique stemware and porcelain dishes. The art collection is from renowned Cape Ann artists from the 19th and 20th centuries including Quarterly, Chaet, and Gruppe. Design ideas for a traditional bathroom in Chicago.

The restoration of an 1899 Queen Anne design, with columns and double gallery added ca. 1910 to update the house in the Colonial Revival style with sweeping front and side porches up and downstairs, and a new carriage house apartment. All the rooms and ceilings are wallpapered, original oak trim is stained, restoration of original light fixtures and replacement of missing ones, short, sheer curtains and roller shades at the windows. Perched atop a bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, this new residence adds a modern twist to the classic Shingle Style. The house is anchored to the land by stone retaining walls made entirely of granite taken from the site during construction. This understairs WC was functional only and required some creative styling to make it feel more welcoming and family friendly. We installed UPVC ceiling panels to the stair slats to make the ceiling sleek and clean and reduce the spider levels, boxed in the waste pipe and replaced the sink with a Victorian style mini sink. We repainted the space in soft cream, with a feature wall in teal and orange, providing the wow factor as you enter the space.

First-floor powder room. Original powder room was added to the house in 2016, but since we had to put a soffit in the ceiling to carry plumbing from the master bathroom above, they continued the wood detail from the old (now non-functional) soffit at the right.

For the Powder Room, we used 1" slabs of salvaged antique marble, mounting it on the walls at wainscoting height, and using a brilliant brushed brass metal finish, Cole and Sons Flying Machines - a Steampunk style wallpaper. Gallery Wall - During the Victorian era there was an obsession with the natural world. Travel became accessible and Victorian's could visit exotic locations and observe rare specimens of floral and fauna. They were creating detailed sketches and collecting actual specimens of plants, birds, insects, seashells, and fossils. The sketches would be framed and specimens would be showcased in a shadowbox or glass dome. These treasures were displayed as decorative art in the Victorian home. Our gallery wall is an update of those traditional collections. Reproduction botanical prints, decorative plates and framed photographs focus on close up views of birds, bees and butterflies.
