Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Conservation Area, Harwood Cottage is a Grade II Listed, three bedroom, Georgian cottage located within Old Town in the heart of the iconic North Cornwall coastal village of Boscastle. The restoration was led by careful consideration of context and materiality. Early engagement with Cornwall Council’s Conservation Officer contributed to the successful outcome of a planning application to replace poorly constructed and unsympathetic modern additions at the rear of the property. The new accommodation delivered an extended kitchen and dining area at ground floor with a new family bathroom above. Creating a relationship between the house and the extensive gardens, including an idyllic stream which meanders through Boscastle, was a critical element of the brief. This was balanced finely against the sensitivity of the Listed building and its historical significance. The use of traditional materials and craftmanship ensured the character of the property was maintained, whilst integrating modern forms, materials and sustainable elements such as underfloor heating and super-insulation under the gables made the house fit for contemporary living. This is an example of a small midcentury open plan dining in Melbourne with white walls, slate floors and grey floor.

This residence was designed to be a rural weekend getaway for a city couple and their children. The idea of ‘The Barn’ was embraced, as the building was intended to be an escape for the family to go and enjoy their horses. The ground floor plan has the ability to completely open up and engage with the sprawling lawn and grounds of the property. This also enables cross ventilation, and the ability of the family’s young children and their friends to run in and out of the building as they please. Cathedral-like ceilings and windows open up to frame views to the paddocks and bushland below. As a weekend getaway and when other families come to stay, the bunkroom upstairs is generous enough for multiple children. The rooms upstairs also have skylights to watch the clouds go past during the day, and the stars by night. Australian hardwood has been used extensively both internally and externally, to reference the rural setting.

Space planning was key to this being a successful project, the customer incorporated style, colour and space planning to ensure a smooth flow throughout.
