Large monolithic architectural details are something we try and bring into all our projects, it’s these details that allow us to be looser with wilder with our planting palettes and for the outcome to still feel considered. In this case, the benches allowed us to terrace the site creating activated zones to higher use of the functionality. Photography by Rory Gardiner

Featured in Feb/Mar 2013 issue of Organic Gardening Magazine, this Boston-area courtyard functions as an entryway, parking space, driveway turnaround, and outdoor room. New York bluestone planks set into a sea of pea gravel can bear the weight of vehicles while allowing rainwater to permeate the ground, preventing run-off. Curving 7-foot-high green walls of shade-loving native plants create privacy and beauty, while native birch trees (Betula papyrifera) in the entry planters provide a handsome complement to the four-story Silver LEED-certified house by Wolf Architects, Inc. While the Southern California drought is keeping homeowners water usage to a minimum, there are an abundance of plants that thrive on minimal water. A combination of drip irrigation systems and drought tolerant plants can keep your exterior spaces green and beautiful as well as water efficient. This image features our design a few months down the road. With the addition of a few spring flowers, this front yard is officially ready for the Spring and Summer season.

The design of our driveways is often neglected, with functionality taking up all the attention. We tend to forget that our driveway is important in making a good first impression, and can significantly lift the appeal and value of your property. But since you’re here browsing the Houzz image gallery for driveway ideas, you have probably realised that. So where can you find the best ideas to spruce up yours?

As every landscape architect or exterior designer can tell you, the possibilities are endless. You can work with gravel, asphalt, pavers and more. You can go all-out with landscaping and create a garden that blows your visitors away with beautiful flowers and tall trees. And lighting is another consideration which can make a big difference.

Whatever you have in mind, browse our gallery to collect ideas. You can save your favourites and use them to brief your landscaper later, and you can even narrow down your search to driveways in certain styles, sizes or in certain parts of the world - images of Australian driveways will show the right plants straight away, whereas American designs will have to be adapted to your climate. Let’s have a look at some of the most popular driveway ideas.

Green Driveway

If you have caught onto an eco-friendly lifestyle, a green driveway is probably what you want. Driveway ideas with grass come in many forms. For example, you can surround your driveway with grass or other greenery, and set a cobblestone or an asphalt road landing in front of the house, or you can lay pavers and let the grass grow in between. The finishing touch would be adding some other plants like flowers or trees, to round off the look.

Cobblestone Circular Driveway

Circular driveways make a great entrance. Place some greenery or a water fountain in the middle and you’ll instantly add that WOW factor to your home.

Concrete Driveway

A landscape architect can help you design a concrete driveway that will last a lifetime. Combined with an iron fence at the front and night lights all the way to the house, you’re set with a stylish, timeless design.

Once you narrow down your ideas, check out the Houzz directory to find a landscaper to help you bring it to life!
