Within this garden we wanted to create a space which was not only on numerous levels, but also had various points of interest. This garden is on a slope, but is also very wide.
Firstly, we broke up the space by using rustic sleepers to create several raised beds,as well as steps which lead to differennt zones. This helps to give the garden a more traditional, country edge.
The sleepers were also used to create a winding path through out the garden, marrying together the various areas. The path leads up to the impressive sunburst pergola and circular stone patio. This is the perfect spot to view the whole garden.
At the other end of the garden another pergola sits amougnst a bustling flower bed, and will be used to train vining flowers.
Along the back wall of the garden a raised bed is home to a stunning display of wildflower. This plot is not only a fabulous riot of colour and full of rustic charm, but it also attracts a whole host of insects and animals. While wildflowers looks great they are also very low maintenance.
Mixed gravel has been used to create a variety of texture. This surface is intermittently dotted with colour with lemon thyme, red hot pokers and foxgloves.
Stone has been used to create a warm and welcoming patio area. Flower beds at the front of the garden can be used for veg and other leafy plants.
Overall we have created a country style with a very contemporary twist through the use of gravel, modern shape and structural landscaping.

This late 19th century property in Knightsbridge London was selected by one of the leading luxury international property developers, to renovate into luxury apartments with an adjoining roof terrace to the rear. Aralia were appointed, together with a multidisciplinary team of architects, engineers and interior designers to overcome the sites constraints and create a beautiful and very high quality roof terrace London garden. In the short term, the roof terrace served to attract buyers by reflecting the high level of quality associated with this particular developer as well as innovative design solutions to combat a very difficult site, whilst in the long term having to provide a series of very elegant and contemporary garden spaces.
Typical of many small London terrace gardens, this garden came with many constraints, particularly relating to privacy. The terrace was sandwiched between two terrace rows and therefore was significantly overlooked by the adjacent neighbouring property, together with apartments on upper floors. The design of this space had to carefully consider how privacy could be achieved without limiting the existing light levels which, due to its aspect, were far from ideal. Another constraint was the fact that the terrace was on a podium above the basement level and therefore weight limitations and any build up requirements were very restricted, and therefore had to be carefully coordinated with the project engineer.

The rustic ranch look of knotty cedar fencing gets a contemporary twist in our design of this Chelsea rooftop garden. This fencing gives some much needed privacy from a common roof, while the black and tan pergola casts a bit of welcome shade for seating on a sunny south-facing roof. Additional design elements include artificial turf, contemporary outdoor furniture, black fiberglass planters, and geometric custom lattices. When we first saw this roof garden’s existing pavers, they were very weathered and benefited greatly from a power washing to help clean and brighten them up, which made them look brand new again. Plantings include wisteria, clematis, and Patriot hostas. See more of our projects at www.amberfreda.com.
