Wet bar that doubles as a butler's pantry, located between the dining room and gallery-style hallway to the family room. Guest entry to the dining room is the leaded glass door to left, bar entry at back-bar. With 2 under-counter refrigerators and an icemaker, the trash drawer is located under the sink. Front bar countertop at seats is wood with an antiqued-steel insert to match the island table in the kitchen.

I designed a custom bar with a wine fridge, base cabinets, waterfall counterop and floating shelves above. The floating shelves were to display the beautiful collection of bottles the home owners had. To make a feature wall, as an an alternative to the intertia, expense and dust associated with tile, I used wallpaper. Fear not, its vynil and can take some water damage, one quick qipe and done. We stayed on budget by using Ikea cabinets with custom cabinet fronts from semihandmade. In the foyer beyond, we added floor to ceiling storage and a surface that they use as a foyer console table.

Birchwood Construction had the pleasure of working with Jonathan Lee Architects to revitalize this beautiful waterfront cottage. Located in the historic Belvedere Club community, the home's exterior design pays homage to its original 1800s grand Southern style. To honor the iconic look of this era, Birchwood craftsmen cut and shaped custom rafter tails and an elegant, custom-made, screen door. The home is framed by a wraparound front porch providing incomparable Lake Charlevoix views. The interior is embellished with unique flat matte-finished countertops in the kitchen. The raw look complements and contrasts with the high gloss grey tile backsplash. Custom wood paneling captures the cottage feel throughout the rest of the home. What type of home bar is best suited to your needs?

Home bars come in all shapes and sizes, and with an array of practicalities. Utilise an awkward corner with a cabinet bar; maximise floor space with a trunk bar, which unfolds to create a bar counter; or conveniently turn any space in your house into a bar room with a mobile bar such as a fun bar cart. If you prefer a more grandiose option, or all the amenities of a real bar, you can’t go past a built-in home bar.

What home bar functionalities do you want to include?

Decide how you will use the bar and whether you will need sinks, storage and refrigeration. Including a sink in your home bar design is a practical addition if you choose a location far from your kitchen. How can you personalise your bar design?

Bar tools and accessories are an easy and interchangeable way to personalise your bar design. You may want to create a wine bar, tavern-style bar or retro bar, so look for wine glasses and tumblers, for instance, that will help carry this style. Coasters, bar mats or signage will help you to further achieve your desired look.
