Kitchen Pantry Design Ideas
Stuck for ideas for your kitchen pantry? Look no further than our image gallery for inspiration!
If you have a messy kitchen, a pantry is what you need to bring order back into your life. It’s a place that expands your kitchen storage, letting you organise all your items - from snacks to canned tomatoes to fancy dishes for special occasions. It can be a separate room or just one cabinet. Either way, it’s usually a life-changing addition to your kitchen and comes with a rich history.
Pantry ideas for small kitchens
If you have a smaller kitchen, you’re most likely looking for a simple cabinet as a pantry. If you’re concerned you won’t have the space, you may be surprised with the amount of options you’ll find on Houzz. For example, pull-out pantries can be ideal for small kitchens, or even adding some pull-out shelves can make a big difference in organising your staple foods and appliances. Corner pantries can save a lot of space, too!
What if you have more space?
If your kitchen is on the bigger side, you may consider a butler’s pantry, also known as scullery or walk-in pantry. These can even act like a second kitchen, where messy food preparation can be done and hidden away from guests. Back in the day the butler even used to sleep in there! Nowadays you may be looking at making your pantry more of a utility room, and possibly combine it with other hard-working rooms like a laundry, mudroom, bar or even an office.
I know what I want, but how do I best organise a pantry?
Once you have worked out which option is right for you, you want to think about which items you need to store and how you can best organise them. The Houzz magazine offers guidance here, and explains how to plan the perfect butler’s pantry or discusses pros and cons of different pantry systems.
If you’re unsure about any of these aspects, a professional organiser can help you find the perfect solution for your space. They will be experienced in planning layout, getting measurements right, and how to arrange and organise your items. They can even help declutter and re-organise your existing pantry! So while you’re saving photos, watch who you’re saving from. You may find that there’s someone who’s work you keep saving over and over again. In which case, you may want to reach out to them and get a quote for your project.

This beautiful Birmingham, MI home had been renovated prior to our clients purchase, but the style and overall design was not a fit for their family. They really wanted to have a kitchen with a large “eat-in” island where their three growing children could gather, eat meals and enjoy time together. Additionally, they needed storage, lots of storage! We decided to create a completely new space.
The original kitchen was a small “L” shaped workspace with the nook visible from the front entry. It was completely closed off to the large vaulted family room. Our team at MSDB re-designed and gutted the entire space. We removed the wall between the kitchen and family room and eliminated existing closet spaces and then added a small cantilevered addition toward the backyard. With the expanded open space, we were able to flip the kitchen into the old nook area and add an extra-large island. The new kitchen includes oversized built in Subzero refrigeration, a 48” Wolf dual fuel double oven range along with a large apron front sink overlooking the patio and a 2nd prep sink in the island.
Additionally, we used hallway and closet storage to create a gorgeous walk-in pantry with beautiful frosted glass barn doors. As you slide the doors open the lights go on and you enter a completely new space with butcher block countertops for baking preparation and a coffee bar, subway tile backsplash and room for any kind of storage needed. The homeowners love the ability to display some of the wine they’ve purchased during their travels to Italy!
We did not stop with the kitchen; a small bar was added in the new nook area with additional refrigeration. A brand-new mud room was created between the nook and garage with 12” x 24”, easy to clean, porcelain gray tile floor. The finishing touches were the new custom living room fireplace with marble mosaic tile surround and marble hearth and stunning extra wide plank hand scraped oak flooring throughout the entire first floor.
