At the top of these stairs is a tiny Carex meadow leading to a garden room resembling an ancient ruin- an idyll where lovers met in secret? The 'floor' inside the crumbling stone walls is an Italian mosaic tile floor with plants growing through the cracks. The 'ceiling' is formed by the canopies of 4 statuesque olive trees. A fountain, once the laundry trough on a French estate, cools the body and erases mundane thoughts with its gentle trickle. Stone urns announce the entrance; at night they are gas-lit to set the mood for the ultimate romantic midnight picnic. Photographs by Mayita Dinos

This gorgeous home has a private entry and a colorful drought tolerant landscape to make it engaging from the front. This path had dymondia growing between the stones which is hardy and can be walked upon. It can handle sun and little water however does need trimming and will grow quickly. This front yard is a mixture of colorful drought tolerant plants, edible citrus and flagstone. The local wildlife love being able to eat here and the homeowners love coming out in the morning with a hot cup of coffee. The hillside garden two years after it was planted. This sloped hillside was been transformed into a beautiful tapestry of colors and textures in every season. I specified drought tolerant plants and shrubs that are low maintenance and deer resistant. Located in Novato, CA - Marin County. The hillside has filled in beautifully! © Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design
