The Don lies in a quiet pocket of Brunswick: an area dotted with heritage homes and rich with manufacturing history. Looking past years of neglect, our client saw the promise of the existing weatherboard house - with its circa-1900s charm, brick chimneys and beautiful Victorian details – and sought to transform it into a versatile family home. A careful renovation and restoration has preserved the cottage’s traditional features and layout, and this front section of the home has been reconfigured to contain refreshed bedrooms and bathrooms. The original hallway beginning at the front door now leads through to the north-facing rear extension, where living spaces and courtyards unfold on either side of this central spine. The kitchen is the axis of this zone: spacious, hardwearing and practical, it’s well-equipped for passionate cooks and effortlessly accommodates family gatherings. It connects easily to the two living spaces, the dining room, and the patio nestled in the garden. Inspired by Brunswick’s masonry history, red brick is the bedrock of the extension. It serves as a continuous floor that stretches from the internal rooms out to the patio, providing a robust surface fit for family life. Slicing through this earthy foundation is the smooth brightness of steel - a lightweight contrast in the form of external cladding, benchtops, light fittings and handles throughout. In the spaces between these two elemental materials, pale green finishes, soft neutrals and rich timbers round out the balanced, lush interiors of an enduring family home.

This light-filled dining space was refreshed with a full decorative update by ABP Interiors. The room features new wool carpet underfoot, fresh paintwork, and thoughtfully layered furnishings. Custom Roman blinds in a delicate floral pattern frame the bay window, while twin pendant lights add symmetry and soft ambiance above the existing dining table. Finishing touches include bespoke lamps and accessories, creating a space that’s both elegant and welcoming.

With views out to sea, ocean breezes, and an east-facing aspect, our challenge was to create 2 light-filled homes which will be comfortable through the year. The form of the design has been carefully considered to compliment the surroundings in shape, scale and form, with an understated contemporary appearance. Skillion roofs and raked ceilings, along with large expanses of northern glass and light-well stairs draw light into each unit and encourage cross ventilation. Each home embraces the views from upper floor living areas and decks, with feature green roof gardens adding colour and texture to the street frontage as well as providing privacy and shade. Family living areas open onto lush and shaded garden courtyards at ground level for easy-care family beach living. Materials selection for longevity and beauty include weatherboard, corten steel and hardwood, creating a timeless 'beach-vibe'.

The Heart of the Home: the kitchen and dining space. Typical of Victorian homes, the kitchen was a little compact in proportion to the other ground-floor spaces. It was a delicate balance of practicality — how to create enough worktop space without compromising circulation around the island. A few layouts were developed, each helping to form the final brief to the kitchen maker. Warm brass accents and polished quartz bring just the right touch of luxury, while wide garden views make the dining area a calm, light-filled retreat. Keeping things flexible and practical was key: we introduced extendable dining tables and seating, ready for anything from Sunday lunches to large family gatherings.

The kitchen is set on a lowered plane, aligning daily life with the garden beyond. This subtle shift in level creates a layered, multi-planar layout, enhancing spatial depth and connection. Exposed timber, oak joinery and soft light ground the space, blurring boundaries between inside and out.
