Urban Skies
This penthouse apartment situated in the heart of the capitol demanded a stunning and inviting roof garden to really give the client a stunning outside space in the ultimate Urban setting. Working with the Landscaper, we helped develop this amazing covered seating pergola. The design incorporated an extruded aluminium framework with motorised aluminium louvres to give the client shade control but to give the space weather protection. We then included remote operated LED perimeter lighting within the roof along with an integrated heater.

Amber Freda Garden Design
What a difference a day makes! In one day, we totally transformed this terrace from barren to beautiful. Playing on a contemporary Zen theme, we planted bamboo, a weeping cherry, a crape myrtle, hydrangeas, petunias, feather grasses, and creeping Jenny. We recommended a contemporary looking seating arrangement with red chairs for a pop of bright color. Even a small space like this feels totally different with the addition of lush plantings. The bamboo really helps to soften the view of a nearby building. While it’s almost impossible to have complete privacy in a space like this, the plantings create enough of a buffer to make the space feel more intimate and enclosed than it did previously. This garden takes advantage of the chimney tops and attics spaces of the urban landscape of the Back Bay- we refer to it as "Mary-Poppinsville". Split in to two areas- seating and dinning/cooking. shrubs, perennials, annuals, and edibles including: herbs, tomatoes, The client is a gourmet chef and uses the foods in his cooking. With limited space, the most popular edible plants that clients ask for are tomatoes and herbs because the herbs can be used in daily cooking and theres nothing to compare to the homegrown tomato. Where space is generous, we also plant blueberries strawberries, raspberries, lettuces, peppers.

Every space is unique and has spatial parameters. How our clients live and desire to use the outdoor space dictates the design layout. Materials that are weather resistant and hardy make the top of the list and do affect pricing. Plantings define areas, benches and stools allow flexible seating arrangements, bars are great for entertaining as well as simple dining while someone grills or makes cocktails. Ice makers, refrigerators, sinks, grills and lighting are some of the design elements that make outdoor living truly memorable and enjoyable.

This small space in between house and garage was all concrete with cracks. We built this small deck and used linear planting. This gives the space a green feel without taking up too much room. The bamboo we used was Called Golden goddess. I always use clumping bamboos in the ground. Bamboos that run should be used in large spaces or containers. the purple plant is black Alocasia, and the green pompom plant is giant papyrus. The red wood deck is finished in cherry with a glossy coat on top.
