We transformed this home’s exterior with a stunning front porch addition. We demolished the old concrete steps and footings, laying the groundwork for a new structure. The new porch, built with pressure-treated lumber and durable composite materials, includes a stylish overhang with a barrel-cove ceiling and supporting columns. A white Westbury guardrail system adds elegance and safety. We replaced the hexagonal bathroom window and upgraded the front entry with a new fiberglass and full-view storm door. The finished porch, complete with an overhead light, enhances the home’s curb appeal and adds a welcoming, functional space for the homeowners to enjoy.

This beautiful new construction craftsman-style home had the typical builder's grade front porch with wood deck board flooring and painted wood steps. Also, there was a large unpainted wood board across the bottom front, and an opening remained that was large enough to be used as a crawl space underneath the porch which quickly became home to unwanted critters. In order to beautify this space, we removed the wood deck boards and installed the proper floor joists. Atop the joists, we also added a permeable paver system. This is very important as this system not only serves as necessary support for the natural stone pavers but would also firmly hold the sand being used as grout between the pavers. In addition, we installed matching brick across the bottom front of the porch to fill in the crawl space and painted the wood board to match hand rails and columns. Next, we replaced the original wood steps by building new concrete steps faced with matching brick and topped with natural stone pavers. Finally, we added new hand rails and cemented the posts on top of the steps for added stability. WOW...not only was the outcome a gorgeous transformation but the front porch overall is now much more sturdy and safe!

Our custom ordered railing arrived this week, and so we took advantage of a beautiful afternoon today to complete this front porch transformation for one of our latest customers. We removed the old wooden columns and railing, and replaced with elegant aluminum columns and decorative aluminum scroll railing. Just in time for Halloween, the only thing scary about this front porch entrance now is the decorations!

Historic recration in the Muesam District of Richmond Va. This 1925 home originally had a roof over the front porch but past owners had it removed, the new owners wanted to bring back the original look while using modern rot proof material. We started with Permacast structural 12" fluted columns, custom built a hidden gutter system, and trimmed everything out in a rot free material called Boral. The ceiling is a wood beaded ceiling painted in a traditional Richmond color and the railings are black aluminum. We topped it off with a metal copper painted hip style roof and decorated the box beam with some roman style fluted blocks.

This was a porch in Lynchburg, Virginia that needed renovation. The existing concrete was removed and replaced with stamped concrete by another concrete-specific contractor. The porch columns, pilasters, and all existing trim around the porch rack were removed and replaced with cedar columns and cedar trim by us, Greystone Builders. it was an enjoyable job made better by the pleasant homeowners!

Mid-sized Verandah Design Ideas with Columns

A verandah requires careful planning because it is here that you transition from the outside of your home to the inside. A roofed and open, or partly open, portion of a house, a verandah is more than just an entryway to your house. It is here you can play games, sit on a swing chair while sipping lemonade, chat to neighbours, and watch the world go by. What style of verandah should I add to my home?

This will be primarily dictated by your budget, space and overall style of your home. Typically, verandahs are integrated into a home’s roofline, so they will most likely always be a pricey renovation. Flat or skillion-roofed verandahs are popular home additions because they can be shaped to fit most house plans, or extend out to other zones, like a pool, for example. A pitched/gabled or curved roof will give you more height and a more open feel, while a concave roof looks best on a verandah attached to a period home. How can I decorate my verandah?

Your verandah decor should reflect your personality and lifestyle, but most importantly, how you will use the space. If you want it to encourage lounging and people watching, add a hammock, swing chair or daybed – the more seating you have, the more likely you are to use it with friends. Get more from your verandah by including a dining table and chairs, with some feature pendant lighting to draw attention to the zone. You could also go beyond seating, by adding the likes of a console or planters. If you’re spoilt with a view, you can also keep it utterly simple with just two comfy armchairs to sink back into. Add colour through wall hangings, potted plants, pillows and rugs, but remember to opt for fabrics that are waterproof and fade-resistant. If you're unsure, get help from a designer!
