Consider your current lifestyle. If you no longer need to bake five-dozen cupcakes for your child’s birthday parties, you might be able to reduce the number of cupcake tins you own or give up your cupcake carrier. If you have a bullet blender, a nut chopper may be redundant. However, the one supply category I would advocate keeping duplicates of is measuring cups and spoons. If you have a dedicated baking cart, it might be more convenient to keep an extra set with the rest of the baking supplies.

Kitchen clutterLike our bedroom, the kitchen had become a storage centre for more than just kitchen utensils, although I soon realised I had as much kitchen equipment as a small restaurant. Every drawer was full to overflowing and cupboards were bursting at the seams with gifts, various ill-conceived purchases, and many appliances I thought would either make my life easier or make my cooking better, and they probably would have, had I been able to find them.

3. Sort the cutlery drawerHow many utensils or objects in your cutlery drawer have ended up there without you realising? Set aside half an hour to completely empty the drawer and sort through everything that’s there. When the drawer is clear, give it a thorough clean. This is a good time to replace an ill-fitting drawer divider with one that sits neatly, too.Put aside any unwanted utensils, tools or cutlery to donate to your local charity shop or recycle at the local household waste centre. Then, only put back in the drawer what you use regularly and want to keep, allocating a section for each type of item, including utensils and baking accessories. The roomy drawer divider pictured here even has a handy section for plastic wrap.

Declutter spreesOne of the ways our houses can drive us mad is by having too much stuff. Are you forever unable to find things – your wallet, the potato masher, your favourite pan? This is often because we can’t see the stuff we’re looking for among the chaos. If you have a family and new things regularly coming into the home, it’s important to get rid of stuff often too. Regularly – even as often as monthly – go through kitchen drawers, pantries and wardrobes and take stock of what you have, getting rid of what you’re not using.
