Contemporary Staircase, Sydney

This staircase is constructed to match the contemporary open plan living design seen in many home renovations. This Grey Ironbark Staircase was constructed around its Sawtooth stringer. Both treads and risers are 32mm thick joined using an 8mm shadowline detail. The reason behind using a 32mm tread and riser is to create a jagged line of the same width from the ceiling to the floor below. This simple line becomes the focus of the staircase. Complimented with 12mm Frameless Glass Balustrading held with 50mm Stainless Steel Standoffs all linked together with a 50 x 25 Stainless Steel handrail the staircase compliments the surrounding room without drawing your attention away from other design features. To increase safety two aluminium flat bars have been inserted into each tread nosing. These bars protrude the top face of the tread by 1mm to give traction as you navigate the flight. With the installation of wall lights following the nosing line the designer has highlighted the characteristics of Grey iron bark. This material rarely used due to its availability is one of the densest and highly durable timbers on the market. This inspired design from Stuart Wilson Construction in a project in the North shore is just another example of the quality of work produced by Stuart. Staircase Designer – Brian D’Heureux
