As a material for use in the home, concrete is top notch. As the longest lasting flooring solution available concrete’s durability can’t be beaten. It’s cost effective, gorgeous, long lasting and let’s not forget the possibility of ambient heat! There is truly nothing like the feeling of a heated bathroom floor warm against your socks in the morning.
Good design is easy to come by, but great design requires a whole package, bigger picture mentality. The Cabin on Lake Wentachee is definitely the whole package from top to bottom. Polished concrete is the new cutting edge of architectural design, and Gelotte Hommas Drivdahl has proven just how stunning the results can be.

Daniel M Martin, Architect LLCThis modern, industrial basement renovation includes a conversation sitting area and game room, bar, pool table, large movie viewing area, dart board and large, fully equipped exercise room. The design features stained concrete floors, feature walls and bar fronts of reclaimed pallets and reused painted boards, bar tops and counters of reclaimed pine planks and stripped existing steel columns. Decor includes industrial style furniture from Restoration Hardware, track lighting and leather club chairs of different colors. The client added personal touches of favorite album covers displayed on wall shelves, a multicolored Buzz mascott from Georgia Tech and a unique grid of canvases with colors of all colleges attended by family members painted by the family. PB Kitchen DesignThe key to this project was to create a kitchen fitting of a residence with strong Industrial aesthetics. The PB Kitchen Design team managed to preserve the warmth and organic feel of the home’s architecture. The sturdy materials used to enrich the integrity of the design, never take away from the fact that this space is meant for hospitality. Functionally, the kitchen works equally well for quick family meals or large gatherings. But take a closer look at the use of texture and height. The vaulted ceiling and exposed trusses bring an additional element of awe to this already stunning kitchen.

We used white painted maple wood veneers and solid wood painted doors, moldings and trims to give the space a formal style. Clayton&Little ArchitectsDesigned as gallery, studio, and residence for an artist, this house takes inspiration from the owner’s love of cubist art. The program includes an upper level studio with ample north light, access to outdoor decks to the north and
south, which offer panoramic views of East Austin. A gallery is housed on the main floor. A cool, monochromatic palette and spare aesthetic defines interior and exterior, schewing, at the owner’s request, any warming elements to provide a neutral backdrop for her art collection. Thus, finishes were selected to recede as well as for their longevity and low life scycle costs. Stair rails are steel, floors are sealed concrete and the base trim clear aluminum. Where walls are not exposed CMU, they are painted white. By design, the fireplace provides a singular source of warmth, the gas flame emanating from a bed of crushed glass, surrounded on three sides by a polished concrete hearth.
KBC DevelopmentsWith a clear connection between the home and the Pacific Ocean beyond, this modern dwelling provides a west coast retreat for a young family. Forethought was given to future green advancements such as being completely solar ready and having plans in place to install a living green roof. Generous use of fully retractable window walls allow sea breezes to naturally cool living spaces which extend into the outdoors. Indoor air is filtered through an exchange system, providing a healthier air quality. Concrete surfaces on floors and walls add strength and ease of maintenance. Personality is expressed with the punches of colour seen in the Italian made and designed kitchen and furnishings within the home. Thoughtful consideration was given to areas committed to the clients’ hobbies and lifestyle.
