Park Avenue Renovation

Modern Kitchen, New York

800 SF of this pre-war apartment were reworked to provide the owners with a commodious Kitchen, Family Room, Bathroom, and Laundry. The inherently dark space was enlivened by careful attention to color and contrast in the choice of materials - white maple for brightness; stainless steel, back-painted acrylic, and back-painted glass for reflectivity; dark porcelain tile and graphite quartz for contrast; and oranges for episodic highlights. The priority was to reposition the existing spaces by allowing the kitchen to act as the hub. The spacious kitchen is dominated by huge central work surface. The perimeter of the room has two walls of appliances and work surface, one wall of storage and a banquette at the window end. An oversized pocket door allows the adjacent family room to engage the kitchen when open or to be acoustically isolated when closed. Both the Bathroom and Laundry, executed in the same palette, are composed as clean, efficient spaces. Photo by Frank Oudemen
