Murdoch Villa, Macfie Architecture took on the challenge to completely renovate and reconfigure the interiors of this 1911 home. In the front, we transformed the master bedroom by adding a walk-in wardrobe and an ensuite. We also created two spacious children's bedrooms and a formal lounge, plus a brand-new master bathroom. At the back of the villa, we built a new kitchen, dining room, and living room, with custom steel doors that smoothly separate the areas. We added a covered outdoor dining space and a sleek outdoor fireplace that connects to the new concrete pool and landscaped garden. We even created separate laundry room and bathroom that links to the pool area in the lower level. The finished renovation provides a clear view from the front door straight through to the new entertainment wing, the pool, and the gorgeous Grey Lynn skyline. Murdoch Villa perfectly blends heritage charm with modern living and an inner-city style. A huge congratulations to our amazing clients for selling Murdoch Villa within just 24 hours of listing it!

A complete refurbishment of an elegant Victorian terraced house within a sensitive conservation area. The project included a two storey glass extension and balcony to the rear, a feature glass stair to the new kitchen/dining room and an en-suite dressing and bathroom. The project was constructed over three phases and we worked closely with the client to create their ideal solution.

The entry to the home captures the initial theme of water and reflection. A water garden is created with a chill out zone. The elevated water garden mimicks the elevated swimming pool offering seamless intergation with the Pacific ocean. The pool is finished off with blue stone tiles to create a dark reflection pool.

One-point perspective (dating back to Renaissance design) was used to create a strong visual effect. The overlapping of "semi-transparent-shapes" in the form of Birch, Oak and Honey Locust trees, draws the onlooker's gaze up the garden (like a stage set - low in the foreground and "climbing - level by level") into the distance. The dynamic use of water adds impact and dramatic perspective : The reflective pond, an impressive central element - cuts it's way through the levels of the garden, providing continuity, tranquility and calming sound. Water bubbles-up from its source at the highest level (midway in the garden) running "downstream" towards the main living area - the heart of the house, creating an air of serenity. A sense of flow is achieved through the use of a sequence of cascades, utilising and enhancing the changes in level within the garden. Photography : Steven Wooster

La primera vez que entramos, este patio estaba lleno de trastos y mucha maleza. No había sitio ni para pararse a hablar de pie. Pero supimos aprovechar sus escasos metros para poner UNA PISCINA! Sí: con depuradora y todo. (Esto de la piscina levantó mucha susceptibilidad entre el equipo de albañiles al principio). Pero siempre digo: confiad en el proceso! Es el patio más pequeñito y acogedor que hemos hecho y la verdad es que cumple su cometido con creces. En invierno, con la piscina vacía, el banco interior queda a la vista y es perfecto para sentarse a tomar los rayos del sol. Además, abierto al porche es como tener un piscina en tu propio salón.
