Our clients on this project were inspired by their travels to Asia and wanted to mimic this aesthetic at their DC property. We designed a water feature that effectively masks adjacent traffic noise and maintains a small footprint.

This outdoor patio area leads to two guest rooms that are separate from the main house. We added a fountain as a focal point and beautifully planted terra-cotta containers. The outdoor draperies were added for shade on a hot day and extra privacy in the guest bedrooms.

The focal point of this side yard transformation is the water feature set in front of a decorative wall...surrounded by lights and plants. Offers a great seating spot!

Compact outdoor patio continues the Moroccan theme with a water feature and patterned tile backsplash. An outdoor rug provides comfort underfoot, while a colorful bench and chairs provide seating, along with a grey table. Contemporary wall lighting provides subtle way-finding. Potted and wall-hanging plants abound, with rust-colored stone pavers underfoot. Wood lattice fencing provides privacy from the neighbors who might be envious of this little slice of heaven.

One-point perspective (dating back to Renaissance design) was used to create a strong visual effect. The overlapping of "semi-transparent-shapes" in the form of Birch, Oak and Honey Locust trees, draws the onlooker's gaze up the garden (like a stage set - low in the foreground and "climbing - level by level") into the distance.
The dynamic use of water adds impact and dramatic perspective : The reflective pond, an impressive central element - cuts it's way through the levels of the garden, providing continuity, tranquility and calming sound. Water bubbles-up from its source at the highest level (midway in the garden) running "downstream" towards the main living area - the heart of the house, creating an air of serenity.
A sense of flow is achieved through the use of a sequence of cascades, utilising and enhancing the changes in level within the garden.

Small spaces can provide big challenges. These homeowners wanted to include a lot in their tiny backyard! There were also numerous city restrictions to comply with, and elevations to contend with. The design includes several seating areas, a fire feature that can be seen from the home's front entry, a water wall, and retractable screens.
This was a "design only" project. Installation was coordinated by the homeowner and completed by others.
