Blending a modern sensibility with traditional architecture, this garden features a front yard meadow with native grasses (Carex praecracilis) and wildflowers. Poured-in-place concrete pavers in a meandering pattern slow the approach from the sidewalk to the entry. The modestly-sized backyard has been maximized for entertaining with outdoor dining and lounging areas and subtle landscape lighting. Native plants, herbs, and edibles share the back garden beds, and a raised pond brings the garden to life.

Instead of shelling out for expensive flagstone, cut stone or other materials, consider making walkways from gravel, mulches, walkable ground covers or a mix of materials like flagstone with gravel or ground covers in between. Another option is to look for used stones, old bricks and other building materials that may be left over from construction sites, or ‘second quality’ cut stones or pavers at building supply yards that may come at a reduced cost. - jennifer_thom5528256

This sprawling ranch home has two street-side entrances: the main entrance and another less formal entry into the mudroom. The goal was to highlight the main entrance and show clearly, this is the entryway. The first step was the addition of the stacked stone wall which suggests a more formal presence. Additionally, two paths were added, with the main entrance walkway wider than the secondary path leading to the mudroom. The design successfully highlights the main entrance with pillars and stately containers leading the eye to the main formal entry. The secondary entrance has been transformed with a cozy sitting area.
The back part of the property did not meet the needs of our clients. The existing hardscape was a mass of brick paths leading to infrequently used doors. Neither the hardscape nor the overgrown landscape suited our clients’ desire for clean lines and simplicity. All this was replaced with a lounging area and a larger dining area to accommodate their guests.

Small spaces can provide big challenges. These homeowners wanted to include a lot in their tiny backyard! There were also numerous city restrictions to comply with, and elevations to contend with. The design includes several seating areas, a fire feature that can be seen from the home's front entry, a water wall, and retractable screens.
This was a "design only" project. Installation was coordinated by the homeowner and completed by others.
