This client wanted to experience Santa Fe in Sierra Madre. Challenges were the steep hillside lot, great views, fire concerns and narrow car access. We created a rustic home with a low profile, lush surroundings and an air of quiet tranquility.
This rustic southwestern house uses reclaimed vegas and logs for the structural system and asphalt emulsion mud adobe walls for the finish. The house is like an adobe village separated into four structures connected by verandas, courtyards and log bridges.
HUX London
Settling here from overseas, the owners of this house in Primrose Hill chose the area for its quintessentially English architecture and bohemian feel. They loved the property’s original features and wanted their new home to be light and spacious, with plenty of storage and an eclectic British feel. As self-confessed ‘culture vultures’, the couple’s art collection formed the basis of their home’s colour palette. Originally set over four-storeys, the property was tall and narrow with boxy rooms, which made it feel dark and poky. Custom joinery was designed in a myriad of different styles for each room to house the family’s belongings. The ceiling height was increased to create a bright, open family kitchen-diner, which leads to a courtyard garden. There’s a fresh, energetic palette, with aqua-blue and white kitchen cabinetry complemented by fashionable ice cream shades in the dining area. A colourful bespoke rug and contemporary artwork provide the finishing touches. Custom-made cabinetry sits within an alcove housing children’s books, toys and a TV, while further storage is concealed beneath a smart upholstered banquette. In the master suite, a corridor of stylish soft pink panelling conceals floor-to-ceiling wardrobes and leads to a stunning antique mirrored doorway, behind which is a generous marble-clad en-suite bathroom.

Our architecture team was proud to design this traditional, cottage inspired home that is tucked within a developed residential location in St. Louis County. The main levels account for 6097 Sq Ft and an additional 1300 Sq Ft was reserved for the lower level. The homeowner requested a unique design that would provide backyard privacy from the street and an open floor plan in public spaces, but privacy in the master suite.
Challenges of this home design included a narrow corner lot build site, building height restrictions and corner lot setback restrictions. The floorplan design was tailored to this corner lot and oriented to take full advantage of southern sun in the rear courtyard and pool terrace area.
There are many notable spaces and visual design elements of this custom 5 bedroom, 5 bathroom brick cottage home. A mostly brick exterior with cut stone entry surround and entry terrace gardens helps create a cozy feel even before entering the home. Special spaces like a covered outdoor lanai, private southern terrace and second floor study nook create a pleasurable every-day living environment. For indoor entertainment, a lower level rec room, gallery, bar, lounge, and media room were also planned.

Christine FrancisDescribed By Jenny Rose-Innes, author & international style aficionado; ‘Like entering a jewellery box!’ A humble terrace house has been decorated with huge personality. Our client had only a few requests, lots of green, lots of pattern and space for her vast collection of Antique Furniture & Art. With such an enthusiastic vision for only a wee little house, we decided to imagine the spaces as if they were in fact much larger than they are by using bold colours and dramatic pattern. A sophisticated, green scenic Chinoiserie Wallpaper by Mary Mcdonald immediately creates an unexpected sense of enchantment on entering, each room having its own unique colour scheme, favourite colours of the lady of the house.
The one and only guest bedroom-come study, decorated with a day bed and sky high upholstered wall panels is every shade of green all at once. Classic Continental Antique Furniture, Mirrors & Lights coordinate elegantly with the English & French fabrics selected for their practicality and beauty. The master bedroom A narrow hall leads to an open living space and courtyard beyond, the Jasmine Room. Ocelot Wing Back Chairs, sisal carpets, indigenous artwork, antique furniture and unusual curios all work well together creating a very interesting interior.

American Institute of Architects, San Francisco
Built in 1949 for a prominent San Francisco family by Campbell and Wong, the well-loved original house represented forward thinking for the time, with an emphasis on an open floor plan and indoor-outdoor relationships to a central courtyard. However, the configuration of spaces with living spaces on the ground floor, the northern orientation of the home, and architectural language deprived the home of natural light and failed to capture the significant views to the adjacent Presidio open space. The major design goal was to create a warm, inviting, and organic-feeling modern home for this family of four defined by the qualities of this unique site. The house needed to take advantage of sweeping views and its unique perch above 1500 acres of protected parklands, while bringing significant natural light and openness into the home. It was clear that the house needed to defer to the natural beauty of the Presidio and the feeling of a country home in the heart of the city. The principal move inverts the floor plan and moves the living spaces to the upper floor where opportunities for introducing natural light abound. By extending the house horizontally to the south, the new design takes advantage of the full width of the property, creating spaces that are expansive in every direction. The introduction of a 12 foot by 24 foot skylight at the center of the home extending over the full width and length of the kitchen floods light into the open, connected living spaces. Combined with the remainder of this southern addition, the house takes on a wide horizontality atypical of San Francisco's narrow, tall residential spaces.
