Concrete isn’t the only option, though. “You don’t have to use concrete,” says Gabriel. “We design our garden rooms and sheds on timber bases, damp-proofed and anchored to the ground with screws, which is a lot better for the environment.”Paving slabs set into sharp sand are another option, according to Priestman, “or eco-base type products [such as those made from recycled plastic]. In all cases, there should be a sub-layer of compacted hardcore and ballast,” he says.Whatever you choose, Gabriel adds, your installer needs to “consider rainwater run-off and the base of the shed not rotting due to standing in something damp”.

7. Location: Seattle, USAWhy we love it: This architecturally designed structure by SHED Architecture & Design is the most sophisticated potting shed we’ve come across. It’s practical too; the extra-wide sliding door makes it easy for the gardener to move plants in and out.

Contemporary The modular design and horizontal wood slats give this shed a more modern look that would work well for contemporary gardens. This particular structure is designed to house two side-by-side storage units, each accessed by sliding doors. In front, the door slides open to reveal a potting station and garden tools.

Would be good if there could be a swivelling door to the outdoor room which could conceal washing line when open

More complicated outdoor shed/storage. Not as needed just for storage, but I like the style thinking about screening or dividing areas around shed/sauna/etc.
