Sally was asked to design and oversee the complete refurbishment of this stunning yet poorly converted one bedroom apartment set in a handsome period mansion block on the outskirts of Covent Garden in Central London. Enormously high ceilings give this apartment a New York lofty feel while large original windows flood the space with natural light. Sally discovered that original windows and decorative pillars had been boarded up and so immediately set about reinstating these unique period features. A streamlined kitchen with expansive lightly veined worktops and contemporary oak cabinetry was designed to compliment a classic oak parquet floor, giving the apartment a light, contemporary and natural feel. Rich tones of walnut, brushed brass, shades of tobacco and forest green leather, chocolate velvet and earthy linens were all added to create a layered and eclectic palette set against a backdrop of atmospheric teal and interesting off-beat light fittings.

This luxurious urban garden transformation reimagines a once-blank canvas into a striking private retreat, rich in detail and layered with design complexity. Positioned in the heart of the city, the garden now offers a serene, high-end escape—thoughtfully crafted to deliver visual impact from every angle, whether viewed from inside the home or experienced within the space itself. Though the original plot was level, we introduced the illusion of depth and dimension through elevated design elements, including Schellevis floating steps, which lend an architectural elegance and subtly define spatial zones without disrupting the garden’s flow. Strategic planting anchors the layout, with four distinctive specimen trees—two Dicksonia antarctica, one Feijoa, and one Trachycarpus fortunei—each contributing to carefully curated focal points that guide the eye and enhance the sense of scale. The rear shed is artfully concealed using vertical timber posts, positioned behind the Feijoa to maintain natural beauty without visual distraction. A custom bespoke metal pergola adds verticality and contemporary flair, creating a sculptural frame that draws the eye upward and balances the garden’s horizontal lines. Together, these elements work harmoniously to create a garden that feels expansive, immersive, and deeply refined.

Materialität und Struktur — sinnlich und reduziert Im Innenraum bestimmt Seekiefer das Bild: weiß geölt, entwickelt sie eine natürlich warme, luftige Atmosphäre. Das Innere haben wir bewusst nicht in kleine Zimmer unterteilt, sondern über eine geschickte Zonierung organisiert: Schlafalkoven für die Kinder bieten Rückzugsorte ohne starre Begrenzungen, eine auskragende Fensternische erweitert den Raum und schafft einen besonderen Aufenthaltsort auch an regnerischen Tagen. Die anderen Fensteröffnungen wurden ebenfalls gezielt nach den inneren Raumabfolgen neu platziert und proportioniert – jedes Fenster fängt eine spezifische Blickachse ein oder referenziert auf das Nutzungsszenarium dahinter. Außen wurde das Haus mit rauen, vertikal angeordneten Holz-Spundbrettern bekleidet, die mit den Jahren natürlich vergrauen und es harmonisch in die Landschaft einbinden

Für einen Umbau in Schwäbisch Hall haben wir diese tolle Küche in einem sehr modernen Kaschmir-Ton gebaut. Sie sieht aus, als ob im Haus schon immer eine offene Küche war.

Opening up the frosted glass doors gives a full view of the split layout: shower on one side, toilet on the other. Both zones feel private, yet still connected to the overall scheme. The layout supports two people using the space at once, without it ever feeling tight.

Each child had an ensuite so we worked with them to personalise it. The brief for this was pink, pink and pink!

The bathroom is a compact space with low ceilings, so I wanted to make it feel as light and airy as possible. I kept the colours natural, adding texture and special luxurious touches with the terrazzo, sheer curtain, fluted glass, and tiles. These rich but subtle details catch your eye, making the room feel bigger. The green glazed shower tiles pick up on the specks in the terrazzo floor tiles, and the Carrara marble skirting board adds luxury and creates another level of finish. I specified ABI Interiors matching brassware. Their electric heated individual towel rails can be turned on and off whenever you need them to save energy. The shower controls are located just outside the shower enclosure, so you can turn the shower on in advance and let it warm up a little before you enter. To maximise storage, I included an Aqua Roc basin with drawers underneath. The Carrara marble ledge and Tika Moon walnut wall unit provide even more space for my clients to stash things away. The freestanding bath and circular Spark and Bell wall lights add softness and curves. The sheer curtain is mounted on a wave track to give a lovely, rippled effect. A very small courtyard space transformed into a welcoming cosy garden retreat to relax in and to share with friends. The courtyard includes a Western Red Cedar bench, rendered raised planters, a composite Millboard deck, laser cut back-lit metal wall panels, highly ornate patterned porcelain paving and calming atmospheric planting. This garden won the BALI 2024 Award for best small garden space.
