4. A Jammed Sash WindowNeil Gibbins, a qualified tradesperson and a Hire A Hubby franchisee in Gladesville, NSW, says: Many older houses have beautiful timber sash windows. When they were new, the gaps between the moving windows (the sashes) and the window frames were small to stop drafts. But over the years the gaps become smaller and jamming can occur, mainly due to: Overpainting – multiple coats of paint on the window frames reduces the gaps. Dry paint that seals over the gaps and effectively glues the windows shut (this happens when the paint dries with the window shut). The simple solution is to reinstate the gap so the moving parts can slide past each other.

What are the main styles to choose from?Double-hung windows: These windows are great for flexibility; you can open and close the bottom and top panels on these windows individually and they can also be locked in an open position. They’re great for keeping your home secure while still offering ventilation control. However, the rattling of double-hung windows, especially in high wind areas or with traditional sash windows, can be a concern. If so, consider investing in anti-rattle devices.

Meanwhile, Carole Whiting, director at Carole Whiting Interior and Design, is loving: small, textural Japanese mosaics in natural tones (ideal for use around a fireplace or on a kitchen island), andmosaics that can be carried through from inside to out for a seamless sense of flow between the two areas.
