The Heart of the Home: the kitchen and dining space. Typical of Victorian homes, the kitchen was a little compact in proportion to the other ground-floor spaces. It was a delicate balance of practicality — how to create enough worktop space without compromising circulation around the island. A few layouts were developed, each helping to form the final brief to the kitchen maker.
Warm brass accents and polished quartz bring just the right touch of luxury, while wide garden views make the dining area a calm, light-filled retreat. Keeping things flexible and practical was key: we introduced extendable dining tables and seating, ready for anything from Sunday lunches to large family gatherings.

This Queen Anne House, in the heart of the Cotswolds, was added to and altered in the mid 19th and 20th centuries. More recently the current owners undertook a major refurbishment project to rationalise the layout and modernise the house for 21st century living. Artichoke was commissioned to design this new bespoke kitchen as well as the scullery, dressing rooms and bootroom.
Primary materials: Antiqued oak furniture. Carrara marble and stainless steel worktops. Burnished nickel cabinet ironmongery. Bespoke stainless steel sink. Maple wood end grained chopping block. La Cornue range oven with chrome detailing. Hand painted dresser with bronze cabinet fittings.

One of the most delightful aspects of Victorian home transformation is crafting moments that surprise and bring joy.
Behind the elegant Victorian terrace façade lies a zinc-clad kitchen-diner extension that opens up to a tranquil internal courtyard. With roof lanterns and custom joinery allowing ample natural light, it creates a connection to the outdoors while framing views that add a gentle softness to the environment.
This project has been highlighted in several magazines and has received a Federation of Master Builders Award for Large Renovation Project and Bathroom Project, and is a remarkable transformation that we thoroughly enjoyed working on.
