About Us

We provide service for all aspects of residential design, project advising and management – from details to site and home design. Bowerbird’s Michael Cockram has twenty three years of experience in architectural design. Michael’s professional experience began as an intern in the office of AIA Gold Medalist Fay Jones where he was immersed in the highly crafted architecture of an American master builder. Besides running his own practice for many years in Eugene, Oregon and Fayetteville, Arkansas, Michael worked as a designer and construction administration specialist for solar architecture pioneer L.M. Holder III in Austin, Texas. He writes about sustainable design for Architectural Record and other publications. Michael’s writing and research keeps him abreast of current trends in the green building movement. Michael taught as an adjunct professor of architecture and historic preservation at the University of Oregon for sixteen years. While at Oregon, Michael specialized in sustainable design and design+build projects.

We started with a blank computer screen. Michael listened to all of the thoughts we had about what we wanted in a home. After mapping the side of the hill we were building on, the design started to take shape. Michael not only included everything we had asked for but more importantly, he intuited what we would want to make this our dream home. His use of indoor and outdoor space make for very comfortable and flexible living spaces. We couldn't be happier with the design and the process.

We hired Michael to help us design an addition/remodel to our home, and to create construction drawings. Working with him was fantastic. We had a few very different concepts of where the addition would be located and he did preliminary drawings (including some 3D modeling!) of each option, and provided his advice and insight on the different options without being pushy. Once we decided on the final concept, he made the blueprints. During construction he met with our builder and helped us out with permitting issues as well (even coming over to help out with the site survey). All in all, he was professional, attentive to our needs on the project, creative in his design, and a very prompt communicator. He gets our highest recommendation.

After spending three years seeking a trustworthy, respectable and capable contractor to help us with our basement remodel, we found Michael of Bowerbird Design. It was so helpful to have an architectural designer lead the project. He thought outside the box when it came to layout and provided us with a creative solution that made sense. Michael was very easy to work with. He was open to our ideas, and always came with great ideas of his own that were always cost effective, yet eco-friendly and beautiful. In addition to his design skills, Michael has great carpentry skills. He was very hands-on and added some unique touches to our remodel. He was very responsive, timely and communicated along the way to keep us informed of project timeline and budget.

Experienced, knowledgeable professional great source of help in bringing my husband and me together on decisions necessary in converting small, 1940's bathroom into modern, handicap-accessible one, plus adding laundry closet in adjacent hallway. We were pleased that the architect was able to help us stay within our budget by providing design sketches instead of full-blown blueprints, which we didn't need, as well as developing a plan that would use existing floor space, instead of having to add on to our house.

Michael is very knowledgeable with experience in carpentry and architecture. It was obvious that he keeps current with both subjects. This was apparent when he was able to list pros and cons of various ways of doing something. He is very open minded when it comes to trying something different from the mainstream. He is very good at reusing materials whenever possible. He did an excellent job utilizing every inch of space when feasible. He is creative and his craftsmanship is excellent. Michael created a very nice studio apartment for me to rent. Michael is very easy to work with and kept me informed at all times regarding budget, subcontractors and necessary changes . I highly recommend him.
