About Us
Ikea makes things simple by letting you not buy their doors when purchasing cabinetry. That's where we fit in: Semihandmade doors fit both Ikea's older Akurum and new Sektion kitchen systems, as well as select Ikea bathroom, closet, and media cabinets. Buy everything else from Ikea — cabinet boxes, feet, hinges, drawers, and specialty hardware — then choose from Semihandmade's hand-picked wood veneers, low maintenance colored thermafoils, rugged textured melamines, and our paintable DIY slab and shaker doors, to create a space that is distinctively your own.

I have designed and installed over 12 kitchens using Semihandmade. The first kitchen was back in 2016 using the DIY Slabs. We used the highest grade paint available B. Moore Cabinet paint 2 coats, plus 2 coats primer. These cabinets got another 2 coats of paint in 2020. They looked great until about 2022 when we noticed all the fibers in the MDF started separating and expanding. I thought maybe it might have been an early product defect that they had since fixed, so I reached out to the company and sent in a ton of pictures showing the issue. It was happening in several locations around the kitchen. Their response was that the warranty was for 2 years. They haven't changed anything about the product, and it's exactly the same. I am not sure which is more worrisome, the fact that they don't see this as an issue or the fact that they haven't improved their product in the last 7 years. I now know that they expect these fronts to last for only 2 years and don't stand behind their products. It's basically deposable cabinet fronts. They are affordable, but not priced as disposable. I will be only using other companies going forward, they cost about 10-15% more but the quality is far superior and they stand behind their products.

I worked with Juilette Hewitt in the Manhattan office of Semihandmade and could not have had a better experience. During our appointment, she walked me through the options, provided samples and links to get more samples, and showed immense patience and professionalism. I've ordered kitchen cabinets based on her terrific design advice and artist's eye. Based on my great experience with Juliette and her enthusiasm for the quality of the products, I expect to be more than pleased with the outcome!

Overall, a real headache to deal with. They take forever to complete order and then make mistakes all the way. The quality is not that great for the price.

Concept and materials are good, but execution by company has been horrible.
Several mistakes with our order. Despite the issues all stemming from the same general problem (holes drilled incorrectly), customer service can't seem to wrap their head around it and repeatedly asks for the same info and photos.
Finally thought the issue was resolved and after waiting weeks, received the replacement items in the wrong finish, and had to start the whole customer service nightmare over again.

Hi Jen,
Apologies that it's been a frustrating experience, on top of the stress that comes with any kitchen remodel. Looks like our Customer Service team is working with you on the issue currently. Would love to circle back with you after this, to see how we could improve our processes.

Pictures online are not accurate to what arrives in person. Our wine barrel cabinets were all the same color, no slight variation in color per row based on what the pictures looked like online. Make sure you see these cabinets in person before purchasing - especially for the cost. $$$

Below is a copy of our response to the Customer:
Hi (name removed),
I'm John McDonald. I started Semihandmade seven years ago. Sorry for the delay getting back to you; I got called away unexpectedly last weekend.
As our Associate told you on the phone Friday, I take customer service seriously. I also take seriously how public perception affects our company.
We are very sorry you're unhappy with the bathroom fronts and apologize for any inconvenience. I was listening from my office when Customer Service called. We had serious issues with our phones last week which explains why she called multiple times. We also wanted to address your concerns as quickly as possible. Either way, I would definitely not characterize the conversation as her "yelling at you" as I believe you did in a follow-up email. If anything, I'd call the exchange amicable.
I understand that you think your fronts have a darker tone than normal, but I can assure you that is not the case. We always let customers know color and grain variation is common and should be expected with all our real wood products. We also encourage people to purchase samples before ordering, which it looks like you did not do. Every Wine Barrel project (and every Walnut, Mahogany and Barn Lumber project) is different than another. Online photos can also be deceiving; certainly, lighting plays a factor in finished shots that are sent to us. A wide color range is also much more common in a large project like a kitchen or island than in a 31” bathroom vanity like yours.
What surprised me - and frankly it is something I’ve never seen in my time at Semihandmade, let alone in the 3000 Ikea projects we shipped last year - is the fact that you were unwilling to give us the opportunity to address your perceived issue before publicly airing your dissatisfaction.
Yours is not even a complaint really, more a subjective opinion since - as you stated - the quality of the product is exceptional and the pieces arrived undamaged. Normally photos are sent in conjunction with a customer service issue. That did not happen in your case. According to UPS tracking, the Godmorgon fronts arrived at your house at 12 o'clock Friday. By 12:15, during our lunch hour, you wrote us an email saying you were unhappy with a product. Before we had a chance to do any research at all on the issue, within about 90 minutes - and again without sending any photos or providing any documentation whatsoever to support your complaint - you posted a negative review on Houzz.
While every consumer has a right to voice unhappiness with a purchase, I also have a right as a business owner - assuming a "good faith" mistake - to be allowed to properly address a perceived issue with a customer before that consumer goes to Social Media or any other forum with a complaint.
Additionally, I believe I have an obligation as an employer to protect our company. As mentioned, I started Semihandmade 7 years ago. In that time we have grown to over fifty employees with showrooms in multiple cities, and we work regularly with the biggest and most influential bloggers and DIY experts in the Design Industry. We are not perfect, but we are proud of our sterling reputation. We've earned it by busting our asses every single day.
I realize I am in the minority when I say the customer is not always right. My partner definitely does not agree with that point. Regardless, I think what you did was unfair and unfounded. I also don’t think you had much interest in anything other than taking a shot at us publicly, evidenced by the fact that when Custmer Service voiced the possibility of replacing the fronts your response was, "No, I'd never consider sending them back since they were so carefully packed.”
While negative reviews are never fun, I view this as an opportunity to shine a light on what I think is a fundamental problem with websites like Houzz and Yelp: not all reviews are accurate and valid. And in those instances - where livelihoods can be negatively impacted - business owners are afforded limited if any resources to remedy unfounded slights. As an example, we had a homeowner last year post a bad Houzz review because they found the price of our Reclaimed Snow doors too high. This was despite the fact that we make it clear Snow fronts are our most expensive offerings, and we also carry multiple Ikea-priced doors. When we confronted Houzz, I explained to them this wasn't even an actual paying customer, simply someone pricing our product. They told us that just asking for a price enabled that person to write a review.
Your case is clearly different, and we sincerely do regret your displeasure with the fronts, but the potential negative impact to our business is the same.
I won't take up any more of your time (name removed). If you’d like to discuss a fair and reasonable resolution to the issue, please let us know. In the meantime, I will be posting this email as a response on Houzz.
Best,
John McDonald

My wife and I really loved the way our kitchen and bathrooms came out using semihandmade. We found That Jacky was very easy to work with and very detail oriented. I would recommend using a designer that works with both IKEA and Semihandmade. The flatsawn Walnut is my favorite material.

I contacted Semihandmade and found the cabinet doors to be expensive. I priced out two horizontal kitchen cabinet doors and this is the estimate quoted.
2 each doors only at 30" x 15".
2 veneer/skins to trip bottom and side
Finish: Shaker light grey (or any painted matte item): $22.00 for two doors and $300 more for the veneer panels to trim it up. Total $563.00 before my cost to ship
Finish: Category G, highest, Snow. For cabinet doors only and skin(s) $1,204.00 before shipping cost.
Wow, seems really expensive to me!!

Ordered cabinet doors for my kitchen and bath remodel. Have not yet received the product, but pricing is spectacular for what I ordered. The customer service has been a bit slow; it takes a few days to hear back about any question and I had to call and email multiple times after submitting my plans. Will update review when product arrives.

We just completed a renovation with Semihandmade. I was amazed. I highly recommend them.
I will start by saying we are first-time home buyers with no background in design or general contracting. However, because I had a strong vision of what we wanted, and we have a large kitchen (like 19 cabinets), we decided Semihandmade/IKEA was the best route for us.
We researched a ton, and brought in 7 different semi-custom cabinet providers before we made the decision to go with SHM/IKEA. Each time I researched more deeply the cabinets the local and big box purveyors provided, I found mixed reviews. A theme emerged: Go fully-custom, all-wood, or go IKEA. However, I wanted wood, Shaker doors and some custom panels and features not offered by IKEA. As much as I like IKEA functionality, I did not love their end look. So then I researched 4 different companies that did doors and drawers for IKEA. We eliminated 2 due to significantly higher costs than SHM without better reviews, and the third because they seemed less organized than SHM in terms of the IKEA focus.
My biggest fear was that with no design background, I needed to organize and buy from lots of suppliers. I was getting the cabinets from IKEA, then DIY Shaker fronts and sides from SHM, which then needed painting. We found a highly recommended cabinet painted about 30 miles from us, but to save a few hundred dollars, shipped the SHM pieces directly there. I worried I would forget something, which then would need to be ordered from CA, shipped to the painter near Boston, then delivered to me. It seemed like lots of room for error.
SHM made the process so easy. The looked at my IKEA CAD, and told me exactly what I needed to order. The order was not clumped by like drawers or doors, as one provided gave me, but labeled by each cabinet. Thus I could look through it with my CAD in front of me, and picture exactly what the cabinet would be. They walked me through questions and changes. When I requested a second person on their team look over the final order, they obliged without question.
I went to the paint workshop to inventory the boxes before they were painted. I am glad I did, simply because I was amazed. Each package had the exact number from the IKEA CAD drawing on it (which I had played with between ordering and inventory, which meant the numbers no longer matched, but was still impressive -- so keep a PDF version of what you sent to SHM handy when you do your final inventory and install). It could not have been more turnkey.
The pieces were gorgeous and well made. Our kitchen looks fabulous! If we do another kitchen, this will be my first choice for shopping. An excellent job all around.

To say that I was a bit nervous ordering kitchen cabinet fronts from another state, sight unseen, is a gross understatement. But they were AMAZING to work with and the final product is beautiful. From getting wood samples, to the planning and re-planning, to putting our project on hold for a few months and then delivery of the final product. We purchased sequenced horizontal teak cabinets and yes, they weren't cheap, but they were worth every penny. I can't stop staring at them. I am hesitant to share a photo, only because the rest of the kitchen isn't done and I don't want anything to take away from their beauty.

We loved working with Semihandmade! Budget was a concern, but we also had big plans for a high-end, modern look for our kitchen remodel.
Working with the Semihandmade team made the cabinet portion of our project easy. The took the plans we made with IKEA for all the base cabinets and pantry cabinets, and help us design our custom doors.
Our order was made to exact specifications; not a door or opening amiss. One of the doors had a slight difference in final finish than the others, and it was replaced promptly and quickly.
Their staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. I would work with Semihandmade again without question. The quality of their work is excellent and you gain the benefit of (semi) custom cabinet doors within a reasonable budge.
